ea82 advice needed

Recommended Posts

Hello to the board...I am asking for your help. I need advice partaining to my 88xt, and the ea82 in it. I bought the car with bad head gaskets. I replaced the gaskets, and resealed the oil pump. I had bad lifter rattle. I bought Mizpah lifters, and put them in...still have bad lifter rattle. I installed a manual oil gauge. I have 25psi at warm idle, and 55psi while driving. If it matters, the oil pressure will climb over 80psi when I first cold start the engine. I have put several thousand miles on the car since the work was done, and it seems to be running ok, but the lifter rattle is so loud...its not going away. I have used all diff grades of oil, but nothing solves the problem. I seem to have plenty of oil in the valve covers, so I dont think there is a blockage, but I cannot verify this for sure...if there is a blockage, it is causing issues on both sides of the engine due to the sound of the lifters. If the oil pump was shot, would I still get these types of reading on my pressure gauge? Im about to buy an oil pump, but wanted advice from all of you before I spent the money. What do you think? I don't know anything about the cars history...if it matters. Thanks in advance for any insight.

how much have you driven it since install the HLA's, sometimes they take awhile to pump up after reinstalling. if you've only driven it a couple miles, that's not enough.

when you replaced the headgaskets and HLA's did you replace the oring at the base of the cam carrier? there's one per side.

did you get the correct metal reinforced black rubber coated oring? if not, that's your problem.

a new oil pump might fix it, but might not too. hard to say.

i know its annoying, but if i remember correctly, that is about the most damage that the lifter tick will cause, your sanity.

i had lifter tick for about three months straight in my rx with one of the engines i had in it. then one day, it just went away. it still ticks sometimes when its cold, but hasnt been as bad as it was.

i think its just one of the par for the course things.

Thanks for all of the input! When I did the gaskets, I put non metal orings in the cam cases, but later put metal reinforced orings in, but there was no change in lifter clatter. I have driven several thousand miles since I put the new orings in place. I have tried seafoam, but I will try it again. I also used Lucas treatment, and that made it a little better a couple of times, but didn't last, nor did it make it go completely away at any point. I heard there was a bypass spring in th oil pump that needs to be cleaned from time to time. Can I access this without removing the pump? Anyone know where I could find a pic of it? Cam cases have been thoroughly cleaned as well as oil tubes, etc...Lifters just arent priming up properly on either side. :( I recently pulled into a local garage to check on a muffler, and there was a mechanic who came flying around the corner and he said "Man, that don't sound good...". I explained the whole ordeal and in the end, he was clueless.

Long time Ago, I saw an EA82 sedan that was of a Friend`s Boss, that has the Same Problem... When he obtained the new Lifters, they was so Soft to the Hands` Pressure, they must be Harder; so I Thought that they needed more Pressure to Somehow "Charge" Them... I am not sure how to Explain it in English...

So we Changed the Engine`s Oil (he used 20W-50) for Thinner one (Just one Time, to Test) we used 10W-30 and had the Engine to Warm Up, then we Drove it Several Miles (Around 50) in second and Third Gear, at Higher RPM`s (Around 4K ~ 5K)

While the Oil Pressure Raised Up and had Maintain like That for several Miles, the TOD (Tick of Death) Sound, trend to fade slowly... after a week of driving in the city like that, the Owner switched back to the 20W-50 Oil and TOD is Almost Gone, he said that sometimes it comes back when is Cold, but fades away while driving and when engine warms up.

Maybe that idea can Help you.

Kind Regards!

Thanks again for the input. I'm gonna try some 10-30, and another can of seafoam. Which stands to make more sense to you all....running a thinner oil to prime the HLAs, or a thicker oil to prime them? I guess I was of the mindset that a thicker oil would be better...less apt to drain out as quickly.

Unfortunately if they have been allowed to tick like that for long they will likely need to be replaced again. When they tick they wear due to their increased movement as they are not cusioned by oil.

You oil pump should be replaced, as well as both the relief springs on the lifter supply banjo bolts - they get weak and allow oil to bypass the lifters.

The pump may be putting out enough pressure, but it likely has issues with sucking air due to worn spots in the pump drive shaft and clearance issues.

Fixing the problem often entails replacing the pump, all the lifters, and the relief springs.
