MT Trany Question For a 96 OBW

Looking at a 96 OBW with a bad manual transmission.

From my research here on the forum, looks like

all manual AWD transmissions from 90 to 94 legacy and 93 to 95 Impreza will fit in this car without sawp out the rear diff. (4.11 with cable cluth)

Can someone confirm that? Any other suggestions?

I really want to plug and play, I thought if hydro cluth, some mods are necessary.

The 96 OBW 2.2 manual is cable cluth.

Any other advice???

 

 

 

i don't know about 90 - 94, but this link should tell you.

as for 96 - 98, any manual trans from a 2.5L legacy will work.

BTW, I brought the car and had it towed to my house.

The 5 speed trany was removed and put in the trunk in pieces. The driveshaft was missing:eek:

Basically I need a trany, cv and driveshaft. Will be heading the local pick and pull tomorrow:banana:

Clutch type and diff ratio are the big things with subaru manual trans interchange. Some of the older ones will have a cable speedo, but it's not a big deal, the speed sensor will fit in place of the cable. If some of the switches on the side have different plugs, your old ones will fit in place of them also.

yes any 4.11 non turbo tranny will work. if you have a cable clutch i'm assuming. if you have a hydro clutch you need to stick with a non turbo hydro tranny.

 

the newer non turbo hydro trannys are able to be made to work with cable style cars. you just have to move the pivot ball to the other spot.

the top thread hole is for the hydro fork the bottom for the cable.

 

fyi that picture is a 03 rs tranny that i had in my 90 legacy. worked just fine.

 

also even though they swapped to a electronic speedo the hole in the tranny stayed the same so cable or electro sensor it screws right in.

I found a 5 speed hydro clutch trans from a 97 GT Legacy at junk yard.

1) Is it a direct bolt on?

2) What parts other then the trans should I get while at the junk yard if in fact its direct bolt on?

3) Any other pictures will be nice to help the process?

1)i haven't found any ej non turbos that haven't been a bolt in. in my legacy alone i have had 90 legacy, 93 legacy, 03 rs, 99 forester, 95 impreza, all were bolt in no fuss no muss. but remember always match your rear end ratio to the front.

2)really you shouldn't need much of anything. everything you need should be on your car already. axles fit, drive line fits, tranny mounts fit, my 90 cable clutch fork fit the 03 rs once i moved the pivot ball. the way my JY works here is i try to keep as much stuff on what every i'm buying so i'm getting all the little stuff for free

3) never really took any great photos of my tranny swaps. they are pretty strait forward.

 

only thing i can think of maybe running into is the different bell housings, but they all bolt up regardless. old motors to new trannys, new motors to old trannys. and for the starter bolt that is missing on the newer trannys i just tap and put a heli coil in and use a stud to make it mount like the older style trannys.

1) Do I need to use the donor car's(97 Legacy 2.5 GT) fly wheel?

Or I can get away with just use the fly wheel on the project car(96 outback) to match with 97 legacy 2.5 GT trans?

 

2) Where can I get the align tool for the clutch? Is it expensive? Is it necessary?

if the donor trans is hydro and the other is cable, you're going to run into some issues there. i have both and i don't think they are interchangeable without some tweaking. maybe i'm wrong.

 

match the flywheel to the engine. so keep the original flywheel. alignment tool is not necessary.

Finished the project last week. Everything went well. The junk yard 97LGT manual trans works great in MY 96OBW!:banana:I have no problem converting hydro to cable clutch.
