s'ko
87 rx horn is going haywire on me. sometimes with acceleration, it will start blowing. according to my wire diagrams the horn has a switched ground. something is completing the circuit. the horn doesn't go off when i push the pedal w/the engine off. i also cannot get it to blow by rocking the car. anyone have this happen? anyone know of a priest the will exorcise the demons? thanks bw
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
it only happens During Acceleration? ... if So, Something Loose are completing the Circuit, I Believe that there are two Main Points where it could be, First at the Steering`s Contacts, second Outside nearby the Horn... Maybe there are something like a cutted Wire touching Ground. I Suggest to Start Lookin` at Those Points, if There`s Nothing Wrong, Follow the Wires from the Horn up... if Still you Couldn`t Find Anything Wrong... Maybe your Subie is Trying to Say you Something!!! ... ... Just Kidding! Good Luck!
joostvdw
try jerking the steering wheel I'm betting the switch inside the wheel has come undone ever so slightly which makes the horn blow when you hang on for dear life

Cougar
A short to ground on the horn wire will cause this trouble alright. The problem may be with the switch, the wire in the column, or there may be a problem on the wire before it goes into the steering column. If you can disconnect the wire before it goes into the column you will find out if the trouble is before that point or after it. Tapping on suspected trouble spots with a screwdriver handle may help locate the trouble.
Txakura
tried shaking the wheel. no horn. not sure what motor mounts have to do w/horns' date=' but i have sti group n mount [/quote'] I'm not completely insane; I had a car with a broken mount, (which I didn't know about) when I got on the gas under a hard load the engine would actually rise up out of the cradle and pull on wiring - making all kinds of weird rump roast things happen... like the starter re-engage when the engine was running! It may not be your problem, but it was the first thing I thought of when you mentioned 'can't make it happen with the pedal when the car is off'. Quick easy check, open the hood, put it in gear, hold the brakes, give it some gas... if the engine moves more than normal... .02 Edited March 1, 2009 by Txakura typo
Gloyale
I'll bet the horn itself is shorting.
Flowmastered87GL
My GL had something somewhat similar to this happen. This is what it was for me: I went to start the car one day. Once it started the horn sounded and wouldnt stop. I had to pull the headlights to find the problem. The wiring to the horns had rubbed through and was touching the body metal and grounding to it. So it had chafed for the last 230k or so (at the time) and starting it that day was enough to finally tear through. I cut out the bad section, spliced in fresh wire and insulated the connections. baccaruda
Yeah, I've seen some really corroded connections on the horns themselves. I'm reminded of a practical joke I've yet to play on someone.. it involves wiring the horn into the brake light switch on the pedal :banana:
