davebugs
95 2.2 auto (with the EGR) is the easiest. Any 2.2 with an EGR 95-99 will work - but you'll need the Y pipe. Much information here. SEARCH is your friend. I'm assuming it's a DOHC 2.5.

davebugs
Search around. The cliffnotes version: Must have an EGR (95 automatics, all the 96 and up's that I've seen but others have seen 96's, etc that didn't have an EGR) 95 dual port exaust - no exhaust work needed, non interference. 96 (and up) single port exhaust - you'll need a Y pipe., non interference. 97 and up. Interference, and you need the Y-pipe. 2.2's are much more reliable. You want to reseal it anyways. Baffle plate, cam*crank seals, Orings, spark plugs, timing belt(idlers&tensioner?), etc. See if valve covers need replaced. But seriousely - search around here - very common swap. I'm about to do another one this week myself.
idosubaru
95-97 EJ22 with EGR. if it's a 96/97 you'll need the part of the exhaust that bolts to the engine too, that's it. A 98 will work but the bellhousing bolts are different. that can be addressed though, read on here at USMB. Available in some impreza's and Legacy's (brighton/L models). All of this is covered here. WoodsWagon
I literally did this same swap yesterday. Using a 1995 legacy 2.2l, swap the a/c compressor bracket from the 2.5l onto the 2.2l. Make sure to swap the FLEXPLATE from 2.5 to 2.2, they ARE DIFFERENT! Power steering pumps/brackets are interchangeable, however, the 2.5l lines will not bolt to the bracket on the side of the manifold. You can swap out the hoses and lines from the 2.2l car, or make a bracket extension. It's not crucial. I used the 2.2l intake pipe, just like the way it looks rather than the 2.5, but not sure whether the throttle bodys are the same size. Depending on what your evap system is like, you may have to run an extra vacuum hose. It's easy enough if you look at it. Wiring plugs in, exhuast bolts on, and away you go.
