bratman18
Does anyone know if 2WD and 4WD front springs are the same? I know the struts are different lengths but I didn't know if the springs were different. Thanks

Quidam
I had 88 GL FWD front springs in my hand yesterday. I had 88 GL 4WD front springs in my hand yesterday. Only visual difference was the FWD springs had a taper on the top coil. Doug
bratman18
Hmmm, I just wonder if it's ok to put 2WD springs on 4WD struts.
Quidam
Hmmm, I just wonder if it's ok to put 2WD springs on 4WD struts. I'd say yes. I can't see there being "that" much difference, if any in the spring rates. A big plus would be if the springs you use are lower mileage/newer. That will affect the spring rates. If they have 300 K on them, they're prolly toast anyway. Doug
Yo'J
Someone posted a chart here once about that. I cant find it now but if memory serves me the spring rates are way different. The 2wd has a lower spring rate. Its like 145lbs to 125lbs for the 2wd. My 82' wagon has the 4wd coilovers and it bounces when the rear is empty (I have no rear seats) but it drives like a loyale with a full load of tools in the back. Fortunately I drive with a load most often.
bratman18
So the 2WD are softer then?

bratman18
So, that shows that all were the same.
Yo'J
The spring rates are 196 for both...... Makes sense. Hmm, well I look funny too! Maybe I was looking at the legacies. No wonder I bounce! Is there a chart, say, for ea81s and what they are supposed to be?
Frank B
The stock springs on my 92 loyale are real soft, rides nice but the taller snow tires will rub on a good bump. I put rear struts from a 2wd wagon on the rear and I have no problems back there anymore. The springs were a larger diameter, I think 1mm more. So there are different springs out there. it looks like I need RX springs for the front.. I've owned both, 2wd and 4wd, and the 4wd's were a stiffer ride.
