Hey all.

I have to tow (pull with my bother's van)

my 97 Legacy AWD to get it fixed.

I have had it running in FWD with the fuse for a while,

but am wondering if it's possible to tow it a distance?

It's about 60 miles to the place I am taking it to.

Could i just put it in neutral or what would i have to do?

I rented a car trailer. It was like 75.00 and faster and in my opinion was cheaper than removing the drive shaft and less risk on damaging the transmission. Others will have opinions I am sure.

I like your $75 car trailer opinion. The trailer is made for this work with tail and brake lights, and much safer. This approach also helps to keep the cops off your back.

unless the car is running, the FWD fuse will be useless - for an AWD vehicle it is a must to get all 4 wheels off the ground for towing any distance.

 

it would be ok to tow a very short distance (mile or 2) with all 4 wheels on the ground, but not really recommended.

 

DO NOT tow on a dolly - period.

If rear driveline is disconnected, there is no risk from towing on a dolly.

 

Done it many times.

 

But the driveshaft must be removed. FWD fuse will do nothing with engine off.

ok, yeah - it is possible if you disconnect the rear driveline - but seriously - how many "average" people are going to go to that trouble? Not many...;)

Most people here on the board are mechanically inclined. All it takes is a 14mm socket and a breaker, and a 12mm wrench.

Right on, you shouldn't tow the auto trans with any wheels on the ground. I wouldn't do it for more than a few hundred feet. There is no ATF circulating with the engine off, yet you are turning parts in the transmission and hence can damage it. Disconnecting drive shaft and towing with front wheels off the ground is an option. Or tow with all wheels off the ground.
