dharper
Hi.....my name is Dave and I'm looking for a little info. I have a 96 Outback wagon with the 2.5 dohc. Bought the car with bad head gasket for parts for another wrecked outback. Donor car was in better shape so chose to relace headgasket,t-belt, water pump etc and drive instead of wrecked car. 1000 miles after repair engine started knocking badly. Found two spun rod bearings and severely damaged crankshaft. Due to financial restrictions have given up on repairing engine and replacement 2.5 is stupid money for this car. Now for my question........... other car is 96 Outback wagon, 2.2l manual trans. Can I swap this 2.2 into 2.5 car without BIG headaches. Appears EGR is the biggest issue. Will my 2.5 intake work on this 2.2 engine? How about the flywheel? 2.2 is attached to a 5 speed, 2.5 car is automatic. Any info would be really appreciated! nipper
Yes do a search. I think you just need to swap intake manifolds, but it is a common swap to do. nipper
subaru360
No, the 2.5 intake will not fit on the 2.2 The flywheel will fit. The engine will work in the car as long as you switch the exhaust y pipes, but will have a check engine light for the missing EGR.

If he grabs the EGR solenoid off the 2.5 and just plugs it in to the harness he shouuld not get a CEL

He'd have to take the engine harness off the 2.5 and put it on the 2.2, not a big deal.

He'd have to take the engine harness off the 2.5 and put it on the 2.2, not a big deal.if he found the proper pinouts he can also "install" the EGR inputs into the nonEGR intake or to the body side harness, or to the ECU as well. if you're comfortable with electrical stuff like that it would be the simpler way to go. Gloyale
Swap in the 2.2 and also swap to the 2.2 ECU. The 2.2 ECU won't be looking for an EGR solenoid, so no code
johnceggleston
since you have both cars, use the 2.2L power steering lines with the 2.2 engine in the 2.5L car. it will look cleaner. the 2.5 lines will work, but won't fit the support bracket. let's review, so that's: 2.2L engine, p/.s lines, y-pipe, and ecu 2.5L flex plate (fly wheel), and car Edited March 18, 2009 by johnceggleston
