This is a lame question, but I just bought a 96 Outback 5 speed and all the info. I've seen thus far says that tanks from that era were 16 gallons. I filled it up last night from E and only took 10 gallons. I have no owners manual to look at. Anyone have the inside scoop? Oh yeah, this car is way better than my Toyota with one functioning cylinder...

Its funny, everyone says the same thing, that E takes 10 gallons.

Blu takes 10 gallons on E.

This is just too consistant to be a random failure or fouling of the fuel senders.

E is the new ten :)

Set your trip odometer and go by the low fuel light, but there is really no hamr in filling at E. Now if E took random amounts of fuel in all our cars, then i would be annoyed.

the sending units are infamous for being inaccurate. my sons 95 legacy sat for a year before we replaced the trans. when we first started it, the guage didn't work at all, now it shows empty and only needs 12 gals.

try running a bottle of techron fuel treatment through your next tank of gas, it may help. usually the low fuel light will still be accurate, about 2 gals left. if you figure out your gas mileage and reset your trip odometer you'll know how close to empty you really are. and hopefully the low fuel warning light will come on.

if you search for techron here you'll find plenty of threads to read.

Nipper, if enough people reply to this thread, I suspect you're going to become annoyed. :)

(I won't say what mine takes to fill from E until others chime in, but it certainly isn't 10 gals.)

until your car takes a sudden gas mileage drop. like mine did on the way back from South Carolina.

ran out of gas way too soon, got 20 highway mpg...maybe less and was stuck on the side of the interstate. luckily someone i knew was only a few minutes behind me and brought gas, otherwise that would have really sucked walking to the gas station.

You're forcing my hand. :) I wouldn't call mine 'accurate', but from E it takes nearly 14 gals to fill. However, it's very optimistically non-linear at the top end of the gauge, looking like I'm getting 30 MPG for the first 1/4 of the tank and then dropping like a rock for the rest of the way to compensate.

I do run some Techron periodically, so that might explain my gauge's, umm, 'accuracy'... or not.

More likely, just random luck.

So then i wont mention when I got 32 mpg, but that was in a flat square state.

I run techron too, But I just get gas when it is on E, makes it less painful at the pump.

all of the EJ's i've had are accurate and about the same. i can predict the gas mileage by the gauge on my legacy and impreza that i'm currently driving.

60 miles per quarter tank approx 22mpg

70 miles per quarter tank approx 25

80 miles per quarter tank approx 28

100 miles approx 32

what is annoying is the impreza doesn't have a "low-fuel" light.
