'84 Flat-Four
My ecm was recently fried. I have posted a thread in "Subaru Stuff Wanted"... But my question is... does anyone know if ECMs are swap-able? Grossgary mentioned to me that he thought XT6s auto & MT ECMs are interchangeable... My Soob is an 84 GL 1800 MT non-turbo... are there any ECMs that will work for me (other than 84 GL specific...) Thanks all! ihscout54
There were definately changes through the years, but as far as weather it matters for a swap???. According to Oriley's website they say 83-87 but I dont trust them explicitly. I have one out of my '82 layin around but Oriley says its not interchangeable. Do you have a pic of the whole thing? I dont remember mine having that type of connection, I think it has pins.
'84 Flat-Four
I do not. My camera has been acting up. I will try to take another picture tonight and post. The connector (vehicle side harness) has 15 pin-holes (for terminal connections). I counted 13 out of the 15 actually have connection terminals, and this matches up to the backside of the ecm. Don't know if this helps out,... but i will definitely post this evening... Thanks ihscout54! Fred

'84 Flat-Four
WOW! I didn't know that subiemech85. So I don't need to freak-out over this then...? What the heck does the ecm do anyway... ? If this is the case, then I do not care,... just thought "oh crap, this will lead to all sorts of problems in the future." I wanted to get right on it and replace it. Hmmmm,... ihscout54
If you are going to keep your current induction setup, you will want to have it. But yes it will start and drive with out it.
idosubaru
depending why it fried, some folks have had success opening it up and just replacing the bad resistor/transistor. apparently in some cases it's easy to find and fix. the part costs about 40 cents or something. i know for a fact that XT6 auto and manual ECU's are interchangeable. i've done it. part numbers are not efficient to deduce all possible interchangeable parts. they tell you *some* that will work, but often only %25 or some low percentage of your actual options. '84 Flat-Four
no pics, sorry... I took the ecm apart, and can clearly see the toasted resistors/transistors. I also found the thread re. replacing these components... good stuff and thanks for the idea... 40 cents vs. 300 dollars :-\ Naru, where did u get those numbers? quoting naru: "Probably 46082 7512.Look at 83 up ea-81 engined vehicles.(ea-71 too?)" The ecm only has a serial number on it, and my chilton & Haynes don't list a part #.
naru
Parts book,carparts.com and here:http://www.autoecmecu.com/subaru-ecu-ecm.html All I`ve seen have part #s on them.
