I dont want to reinvent the wheel

So someone save me some work.

 

A car was stolen on my block, and the cops are working hard to keep the crime down, but the economy is inverse to crime.

 

Easiest way to tap into the fuel pump circuit to install a kill switch.

The easiest way I can think of is to just lift the carpet in the hatch/trunk area and get at the fuel pump wires through the access panel.

 

They end up under the dash at the relay, it should be above the drivers feet to the left, but you'd have to do some searching on that.

Easiest thing I can think of is to disconnect and remove your battery if you're that worried. You'll have to put it back in every morning but it's going to take about the same effort as doing the fuel pump wires, etc.

Since I started driving Subies, in 1997 I think, I've always disabled my car whenever I've been in an area where I had doubts as to it still being there, if I parked it for the night, in airport parking lots for the most part.

 

It does require you to open the hood, and isn't as simple as throwing a hidden switch from somewhere in the car. I disconnect the wiring connector from the MAF sensor on the air intake tube and just place the connector back in place, without allowing the plug to make any electrical connection at all.

 

If someone tries to hotwire the car, or has another set of factory keys, the engine will crank but will not start. And with the connector sitting in its proper place, unless the thief looks very closely after popping the hood, the required fix will go unnoticed.

 

Its already saved me one stolen car several years ago after returning from a March Break holiday. The thieves got into the car at an airport hotel parking lot, but abandoned it when it wouldn't start. They did leave the driver's door open a bit when they left, and I had a very dead and frozen battery to replace. But I still had the car!

If you REALLY want to put a kill switch on the fuel pump, I'd get under the car with a meter and determine which wire sources ground for the pump. I'd cut that wire, then add a relay. That relay would be triggered from inside the car with a VERY small switch that doesn't look like it does anything important. If you want specifics, I can look it up in alldata tomorrow. What year and model vehicle are we talking about?

A flashing-red LED lamp (even if it does nothing) will deter thieves.

 

And a steering-wheel club (even if it is not locked) will deter thieves.

 

However, if someone really wants your car, you can't stop them. They could lift the car on to a flat-bed truck, and be gone in seconds.

In this neighboorhood a faltbed at 1-5am sticks out like a sore thumb and wakes everyone up.

 

And its not that fast.

 

NOw Ive had motorcycles stolen that were gone 1-2-3.

A simple toggle switch on the wire going to the starter's solenoïd. Under the hood.

I dont think thieves are going to look for that.

My .02$

 

What I did was a little more (excessively perhaps) complicated.

I cut that wire and soldered the ends (with proper extensions) to side by side small bolts going thru a blank switch plastic insert on the dash. Hardly visible.

I just have to bridge the two bolts heads with a key or a penny for the starter to be activated when I turn the ignition switch.

thats a similar idea but the idea behind the cap is that you dont know which two connect which device. if a thief notices your insert and does it themselves, its as good as not having it...

 

i asked someone who had it done on an STI. he said it was about 400 a few years ago.. and took 3-4 hours of work. but he also had 2 plugs installed.. so it might be a little faster. even still - reasonable

I knew a guy with that never stolen and he liked it. You carry the "cap" with you and you insert it before you start the car and it can be hidden anywhere you want it. He had his up underneath the dash where you could not see it.
