Clutch adjustment 84 wagon

Recommended Posts

I just bought a brand new clutch kit for my 84 subaru wagon with the 4 speed DR 4x4 transmission.I cant seem to adjust the clutch to where I can actually get the gears.I can find reverse only because it grinds.I cant find the other gears at all.I can put the car in gear then start it up and the car still tries to go forward even with the clutch fully pressed. The adjustment nut only has maybe 1/8 of an inch before it runs out of threads. How do I adjust this stupid thing so it will go into gear without grinding or having the throwout bearing whirr on the pressure plate?

Out of threads towards the cable right? (tightening it)

Sounds like you know what you are doing. Are you sure the flywheel is in spec? also this shouldnt apply here but... I went through this on my brat when I swapped the D/R for a S/R. There are a few styles of clutch out there and one of them has almost 1/4" difference in spacing somewhere in the P.P. I had to use a different clutch.

Specs call for 1/2" play in the pedal, if your pedal is badly worn to a nice slot or the cable attatchment is screwed up you may be loosing alot of clutch pedal there.

seems to me you "adjusted" it the WRONG WAY

screw on the nut TOWARDS the LEVER until there is almost no wiggle room when moving the lever front and back

be sure the cable is pulled thght while doing this

if excessively tight, it will either slip or not catch at all, or engage adbruptly at the TOP of pedal travel, opposite of your problem

So you have adjusted it till the t.o. bearing drags and it still wont fully release? Then you have a problem beyond adjustment. Bent fork improper components etc... You might pop that pedel out and take a look at the linkage wear. Do you have the pn. # for the clutch kit you used? You did use a kit and replace all components correct?

I bought the car with a blown clutch. The throwout bearing wore almost all the way through the pressure plate, the disk was shot but the studs wernt touching the flywheel yet.I am thinking that the clutch cable went south as well because if I pull on the cable this white lining comes out.

Ive had 5 IH's: 4 scouts 1 truck, its been years since I sold them, all but one, and its a basket case sitting in another state. I wish I still had all of them but things in life change money gets tight and gas breaks $3.50 a gallon. Then one day no scouts. :( Subaru's fill the void for now. A scout is the only thing I'de give up my brat for.
