84 gl project

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

So I have a 1984 4spd 1.8L Base GL Wagon. That has been sitting in my parents back yard for about 5 years since the last time its been driven.

I'm currently living in San Francisco and need a car to commute from here back to my old town near Tahoe. Now the car does have a few problems but I think with a little bit of work it would be up and running just fine, but I'm no expert just kinda of hope, that's why I'm here.

So here are the problems-

-Transmission either needs to be rebuilt or replaced

-CV Joints need to be replaced

-Clutch needs to be replaced

-Tires need to be changed

-Needs a Battery

Now I believe this can all be done reasonably cheap but now here's the next thing when I was about 15 I used to use this car to learn how to drive a stick and made a little ralley course in my back yard. It was a pretty peppy ride from what I remember and I loved it. So I'm trying to get it back on the road and hoping to add a little more power to it as well.

Does anyone have any answers or questions for me????

Thank You,

84GLPROJECT.

Welcome!

will be Great to see Pictures of your Subie! :)

Sometimes is Easier to just Replace the Whole Transmission instead of Repairing it, but I Suggest that if you write what exactly is the Problem that your Subie`s Transmission have, maybe we can bring more Ideas to Help you...

Everything else is Better to be Changed New: Battery, Tires, CV Joints...

Kind Regards.

Well like I said the last time I was driving it was when I was about 15 and its actually the car I taught myself to drive a stick (hence the new clutch:slobber:)

but the car would have a really hard time shifting into 3rd and 4th unless at really low RPM's (2,000-2,500).

That's I really know about it as of now I need to get it started again to see what else is wrong with it.

But do you guys have any suggestions to get more power out of it and how much this total project is gonna cost. I don't mind the cost much I just love this car its been in the family for years and I've always just loved it so it would mean a lot for me to get this baby running:banana:

if you're going to smog this car in frisco you're about s.o.l. on power upgrades short of major work.

there's really no aftermarket for these cars and what is available is not c.a.r.b. compliant so us cali boys don't usually get to use bolt-on mods.

you still have two options, though:

1. replace your EA81's carb with single point fuel injection from an EA82. you may be able to get this to pass smog, but technically its illegal in ca. from what multiple b.a.r. ref's told me the law says you can't upgrade the fuel delivery system unless you're swapping a new engine into the car and even then the engine must be equal or newer age and equal or greater displacement. this is a lot of work and money for something that may or may not get past smog.

2. replace your EA81 with an EJ series engine from a newer subaru (legacy, impreza, etc). this is the better option by far and would be entirely legal done properly but its much more money. you'd have to replace the engine, get an adapter for the trans, wire the mpfi system, and then get it approved by a b.a.r. ref. lots of money and work, i'm halfway done doing this with my 84 hatchback right now.

i don't mean to discourage you but being in cali, its going to take some comittment if you want to legally see more power.

Hmm good point and I do want a reliable car mainly just seeing what power mods i could do for it just to get some more umph from it. I could get the car smogged when its all legal and then add some mods after that can be switched out everytime i need to smog, if im not out of state by then. I mean who's gonna pull over a 84 soob because they think its got illegal parts haha.

I think the carb is a good idea probably one of the first things I would do and I also found a way to fab up a cold air intake. But that will be for later.

I will update you guys on this project with pics, problems, ect.. but for now i can only write being the car is about 150 miles away from me and I only get to see it once every 2 weeks.

But does anyone have a ball park of what this will cost???

you'll never get a weberized subaru to pass smog in cali, its that simple.

so really, option three is break the law. i totally disagree with the emissions laws of ca, but every time someone bypasses these laws by paying off a smog tech or swapping parts for smog checks they're only providing evidence that grown men need these laws treating them like children.

california smog laws suck, live with it or move out of state. don't make it harder for us libertarians to do what's right by society in the political arena.

Yes but I will be moving out of state soon and I would get the car smogged in my home town and only drive to there and from the city. And yes the laws in California suck but isn't there ways to make the car run cleaner emissions with mods??

I dont think the mods and power you are looking for are in the same relm. If you want the power you need the EJ swap. The ea motor that is in your and my car are ment for economy not speed. A basic EJ swap will new you a 40hp jump from stock and loades more torque. There just tricky because of the computer thing.

Hey im not saying that its not possible. But look at it this way. You take a 93 mustang or a 2002 impreza WRX. Bolt on differend intake system bigger injectors, bigger exhaust. Boom youve got more power. But there are no intake upgrades, or pistons, or computer kits that make a enormous amounts of power for a ea82 car. It is honestly strictly intended for a commuter car. Now the EJ22 is different. Its the same concept but aftermarket backing. You get a 120hp to start from and then go from there. If you have a turbo ej22 its even better. Id say keep it stock, a good commuter car. When youve been on here a bit and see what building one up takes then id go from there. Just some advice. Lots of people come on here looking for more hp and speed but with these it isn tthere.

I agree one million percent about CA smog laws. I've got two 84gls. One passed easily , the other won't. I've been tempted to to switch the plates if i knew for sure they wouldn't check the VIN.

Ya I think for now I'll just use it as a commuter but maybe in a little while I'll swap the EJ22 if I dont feel like just keeping it classic because this car will always have a little place in my heart just like my other car which was a '64 VW notchback. But I'm going to work on the car this Saturday I'll take some pics and figure out a little more with whats wrong so you guys might be able to give me some tips on it. What you see may not be what you expect haha but it has been sitting for 5 years so we'll see:)

Youll get away with it until you get in an accident...even if its someone elses fault.

Youre also screwed if somebody steals the car. It will be very hard to explain why or how somebody stole a car with mismatched plates and other info.

won't even get it past the smog tech if he's doing his job properly, and most of them do cuz their licensing depends on it. ca smog checks require visual verification of the vin.
