An annoying kid in my class (2.2 question)

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty familiar with Subaru 2.2 engines, I just had a dumb question to ask. There was this maroon '93 Subaru Legacy sedan I was always laughing at, because the kid painted the bottom half with BRIGHT blue latex house paint, put on "performance" wheels, a fart can muffler and a bunch of stupid "go fast" interior accessories like a carbon fiber-look shift knob.

I was working on a 2.5 Legacy Outback in my class the other day and this kid comes up and start bragging to me about his rusted out pimpmobile. "Yeah, it has a DUAL OVERHEAD CAM 2.2 DUDE! IT'S MAD FAST YO!" Do any 2.2's have dual cams, and is it even possible to have overhead cams in a boxer layout?

I am pretty sure we never got a 2.2 with twin cams, the only twin cam EJ motor I've seen (NA) is the 2.5L, but the turbo motors are all twin cam except for the 2.2 turbo. He probably just doesn't know what he's talking about. Either that, or someone put a 2.5 twin cam in it.

But yes, they are overhead cam, they have been overhead cam since 1985, excluding the 85-87 Brat and 85-89 hatch.

Nope, this was a stock '93 Legacy sedan (Beat to %(# I might add) with the original, beat to %#@ 2.2 motor. I had a feeling he was talking out his behind.

it's kind of how you look at it. first yes the 2.2 and your 2.5 are overhead cammed. technically he does have a dual cams, because there is one for each head. with that then the older 2.5s and newer turbo stuff would be quad cams. but no there is no 2.2 with dual over head cams on one head, not unless he put them there by doing a head swap. which i'm pretty sure he didn't cause of how you describe the car. but you never know.

Usually the people that really know this stuff don't need to remind the world of what they know by shouting before putting their brains in gear.

Amen!

Ask the kid if you can see his magical engine. Then count the lobes on the timing belt cover.

I've already seen it. It's just a regular, if beaten, stock 2.2 motor.

then no he has nothing fancy. but when people start going off on crap like that i just let them run on and on just to see how much of a hole they can dig them self into.

just like this guy

one of my favorite, "i know nothing about cars but it doesn't stop me from talking big" videos ever.
