Phizinza Posted March 15, 2009 Share Posted March 15, 2009 So whats the obvious? Are you talking about the FT4WD EA82 vs PT4WD EA82 5sp's? They are both the same length so take the same shifter and propshaft. One has vac diaphragm to operate the 4wd gear the other to operate the locking diff. The way to tell these apart are the diaphragm cable on the PT4WD goes up high on the rear casing while the FT4WD one is down lower. They take the same clutch plate. Then theres diff ratios. Both came in either 3.7 or 3.9 (although I think the US PT4WD 5sp only ever came in 3.9). If the FT4WD S/R box is a 3.9 it came from an XT6. AWD transmissions generally ARE single range. Unless you get a european dual range AWD. Never produced them for the states though. Gear ratios are all over the map. Different years of the same transmissions had different ratio's. It's all about what the transmission came from. If you are talking about actual GEAR ratios (1st, 2nd, 3rd..etc) then yes, for the most part the older PT boxes nad the newer AWD boxes have the same gearsets. AWD uses a diferential on the pinion shaft. Splitting the drive between front and back like a diff would side to side on an axle. The improvement in traction under ALL road conditions out weighs any supposed 4wd advantage. I have been wheeling with a couple AWD lifted Legacies, and they have done just as well if not better than the Part time 4wd Subarus. Ive been thinking EJ swap alot lately because the money its going to take to get my ea82 sealed and good parts on it is silly on a 200k motor. So i was thinking if i do this i might as well swap the tranny to the legacy tranny as well. And thats where the whole which is the better one to have thing came into play. You can keep you're hubs, but you will need to get some 25spline turbo axles. OR.....alternately you could split the AWD case, and install the 23 spline stubs instead of the 25 spline.
