Yea stocks OK...especially with todays modern cars, they are starting to put decent looking systems on cars.

But i like doing something that sets me apart from others...sure alot of people do exhaust upgrades...but you can really put some individuality to yourself by the way you go about it.

Yay opinions

I also think exhaust turbulence at the tip would not matter with a stock setup and the relatively minor exhaust mods you're talking about...

I too agree bends increase restriction, but at the tip, THAT's what will cause the tip turbulence more than doulble-walled or rolled edges..

I like the stock look too, but with a touch wider pipe I've been thinking of the rolled oval, angle cut, double walled magnaflow tip

I also like their double walled rolled square

35157_sm.jpg

Kind of like the double walled round, angle cut (would look nice on your rig with the beefier rear end)

35163_sm.jpg

Maybe the double walled oblong, but maybe not so much :-\

35175_sm.jpg

but defiintely NOT a fan of the bent up tips

If your shop is customer service oriented I bet you could talk them in to setting up your pipe with clamps and idleing it with and without the cherry bomb (they could probly throw an older one on for a second) with your magnaflows in place... You're going to buy the magnaflows anyway, so what does it matter if you run some clean subaru exhaust through them for a coule secconds... The cherry bomb, i think you'll deffintely want it on, but maybe they'll clamp one on to let you hear it with and without it. Idle it, revv it.

Just pull out them people skills and sell them on the idea that they've got your and your friends' business business when they help you out. . .

Its your car and you want it the way you want it and you want it done right....

I'm pretty sure i want to do the dumper set up...i like the look.

I agree on the erect pipes...never like the look of them shooting up...i always be scared of any crap ever dropping into them...

Always gotta take into consideration the car shape as well when thinking about tips...especially where the exhaust sits and the shape of any cut outs that may look weird with certain shaped tips in them.

i'm a fan of 4" sized tips too...i do have a soft spot for the oval tips from statesmans though too...my astra had one on it and looked great...well to me atleast.

yea might have to wack on some charm...and maybe rock up with a bottle of wine to help bribe and see what happens.

I've been emailing some exhaust places on the setup i want and any suggestions they might have...still waiting on some info from them and will let you know what happens...one place is a little steep to me, but have brought my attention to something which i want to find out a little more from them about before i jump the gun and start um-ing and r-ing about until i understand everything first.

Hopefully i get everything sorted out really soon...and get my money from the government that is paying for the system to get done...Grrr why do people take so long to reply when i want to know now... that's the only bad thing about living out where i am...can't go into any exhaust places to get opinions since thers only one near by and he don't know much...and all the other places are closed when i knock off work....well will be closed by the time i drive down town to get to them...

Hmmm...

Rite...it has been a long time since i posted..but i've finally got responses back from all of the exhaust places i went to....some were even helpful.

I went with the same story to all of the places i enquired at which was a Catback 2.25" piping to a hotdog/cherry bomb, more 2.25" piping which then splits and goes to 2 Magnaflow Sports Muffler 8"x 5" [14827 street] 4" tip boxes at the rear.

and then i asked them for their opinions and their suggestions on what i was after.

One place said they can't get the boxes i was after and they are not available in Australia...which was total jack seeing i've seen them advertised online here in Australia. They then went to suggest a different product they have called Varex Stainless Steel Mufflers that have a flange in them which is electronic that lets the air flow straight through or around the box. So it allows your car to be loud or quite when you want it...but that was until i caught them out and called their bluff and they suddenly changed their minds and said that they could get them...sounds like they were trying to make a more expensive buy for themselves through me...

others said yep we can do what you want...and that's as much as i could get out of them.

One did advise me though that i should go 2" piping from where the pipes split to twins, since any power i would gain through the 2.25" would be lost if i kept going 2.25" all the way...which i found very handy to know.

the last place...who i seem to trust probably the most now...is a place that did an exhaust setup on a 2008 forester, and they found out that they lost power with a new setup, but gained by just doing the rear mufflers...Dyno tested the car at each stage too...see link below for their results/findings...they advised me that even though their test was done on a turbo version...the results would be the same for me...that is a loss in power, not the same gains etc...

http://www.bestmufflers.com/Information/Custom%20Systems/custom_exhaust_system_subaru_forester08.htm

So now it looks like i might be doing just the rear mufflers after finding out that last fact...unless i find out something else to chuck a spanner in the works.

It's funny looking back, since i've gone from wanting a whole new system, to the cats and back, to from the cat back, to just the rear mufflers...lol

Won't be long and something should physically start to happen...but then again i've said that a few times now...hehe

Cheers

Rite...too any one interested...Rear mufflers and tips are finally done now.

Not what i thought it would be like...thinking about going back to get a hotdog put in to make it a little louder...too quite for me still...plus i did something stupid, like listen to the muffler guy about the size of the dump tips and went for his recommended 3.5inch...think it looks too small in my opinion for the size of the gap in the bumper and the rear of the car...so want to see what the 4inch does really look like when i go back...if i do???

Here's a vid of it

Plus some pics

Went back this last Saturday and got the tips changed to 4" and the mid pipe box removed. The exhaust guy advised me that the box was pretty much a straight through and there was no point in putting in a hotdog since i wouldn't gain anything, so he welded in a straight bit of pipe.

Anyways here's the results...i like it which is the main thing

And some still pics

It's not the famous subaru rumble i would really like...but i'll have to wait until i upgrade one day in the future to a turbo model...when i get over the 25 mark when things start to get cheaper

Nice job!

I think with this stuff, the out come is always a little different than what we've built up and imagined in our heads. I too like the second run better, with the factory resonator removed. It'd get a little deeper if you go to 2.25 inch pipe from the cats back, and stay louder like you like. You may consider playing with intake a bit for a deeper tone as well, but after my mods and further research, i would suggest modding from the MAP (I think on the newer cars compared to MAF like m? '95.. maybe the other way) sensor at the air filter box, modding the pipe from there to the engine rather than messing with the easy stuff before the air cleaner.

Anyhoo Congrats and welcome to the exhaust modded world!!!!

Sounds good, not too ricey or loud (IMO could go deeper ;) and looks good too.

Thanks Superu,

The clip was done on my digi camera, so it doesn't mimic the proper sound but is fairly close. In real person it is a little deeper sounding than that in the clip...but i do agree...i would like deeper too.

I was going to do a 2.25" system from Cat back, but got talked out of it from a company that did a dyno test on a 09 Forrester, which have the same exhaust set-up and they advised that they lost performance when they did a cat back system. But then they said to only do the boxes, but maybe down the track i might give it a shot, but i've got a note now, so i'm happy...for now...hehe

Yea....next project i think might be to clean up the air intake...looked a little into it while i was researching the exhaust set-up...very confusing...but i know that i want to keep the stock set-up due to the water catcher feature in it...but just tidy it up and get the air flowing a bit better...But yea...i'm at the confused state of that mode at the moment

Ditto. I have a low res video clip of my exhaust, but even at low res its still almost 2 megs for about 15 seconds of low res video. Anyway. i can send it to you if you want (PM me, i'm in town from work for a whole week). Remember, single exhaust, 95 legacy 2.2, some intake mods, 2.2" cat back through 12 inch cherry bomb (in place of factory resonator) and magnaflow box.

Congrats again, yours sounds good, i like the 2.5 block though (over my 2.2 ;)

Looking forward to the tips ;)

Remeber, the modification road is a slippery slope!!! Choose well before you go too far down it

Ahhh!!! just had a listen to my exhaust clip here at work...sounds ************e through the desktop PC speakers...:(

Note to all readers...if any...for a better sound, if possible, use better speakers to listen to the clips or headphones that have some quality to them.

Makes me annoyed thinking how many may have listened to my setup and thort it wasn't what it really is...

beter late than never ;)

flicker now has a video upload option for cheap-skates like me.

Ditto on the speakers comment, they don't give it real justice AT ALL. Its really deeper and mellow, NOT loud or tinny. The back-drag is emphasized here and not so obvious in life.

But anyway, here you go.

This was last winter, cold start

Looks like cancer has hit your exhaust a little???

Sounds good, i'm tempted to say though that mine sounds a little deeper than yours in comparison with my clip and the headphones i'm using though

Thanks for the upload.

could be, you DO have twin magnaflows though, so twice the deep flow. I can't emphasize, in person it IS deeper than the low rex clip on tiny camera microphone. :)

Its not a toumor! (recall that movie anyone?) its the mud, the caked, years of mud, clay and red rock country mud... and maybe surface discoloration of the steel but Definitely NOT the cancer.

enjoy
