Can anyone tell me what year models to avoid because of engine problems with the 2.5? I have heard there are major issues with these engines. roger1 Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 We have a 95 2.2L , I think the 2.5L's that came out about 97 and the next years were the problem. Search this site with head gasket, 2.5L engine and you should learn which had problems. I'm sure most of them have been repaired since then, Good Luck!!! Subaru_dude Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 Phase 1 had the internal coolant leak that caused overheating. Phase 2 had external leaks but could easily be fixed with "Subaru slime". mikec03 Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 Sometime in the 02 production run, Subaru changed the head gaskets. If you have an 02, Subaru will pay for the head gasket replacement, up to 100k, only up to Vin number before the change. My 02 has a Vin after the change. So in theory, all the 03's and later are OK.
