I can't find another thread out here on this... so pardon me if this is out there already.

I just ordered a set of key blanks for my '03 Impreza outback wag. The locksmith guy said, "these won't work, the are for a Nissan." We tried to cut one anyway, but no go. Looks very different. And won't work to boot. Smith said the only way to get a soob key blank was from the dealer. A used lot sold me the car with no master keys, only the valet key (looong story)

The ebay auction said Impreza 2000-2003 blanks, but I am thinking they must have changed something as the nissan keys sound like the used to work interchangeably. There are a few posts on this.

Is the smith right? DO I have to go to the stealership to do this?

And, just for fun I looked myself out of the car at the grocery on Wednesday. As incentive!

THANKS for the help!

Not all dealerships are stealerships. I have met corner shops that are bigger freakin thieves.

You do realize for all the work and angst and the cost of your time, you could have just walked into a dealership with your vin number, and walked out with new keys?

Just go to the dealership and save yourself some work.

Be thankful they are not imobilizer keys.

Sorry to let my angst shine thorough. I know that many Subaru dealerships are honest business owners--sadly, that is just not the case with what I have locally. Did not mean to over simplify humanity!

So that is my only option for keys then? the dealership?

Nope. No numbers in the manual. I did see the line where the original owner could have written the numbers in though :-\

No worries. I was just wondering if there was a place to buy blanks, but it sounds like I just need to go in with the VIN.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Go back to a dealer and have him run your VIN # and hope the original salesman entered the keycode in the computer. If not try to get a key blank from them.

I have key blanks for my '97 Impreza, SOA # 57430AA130 and they come with that cute little LED light. If you're pressed (and it's the right number) I'll sell one for $15 (a little more than I paid) plus mailing.

The earlier Subarus all used a Nissan/Datsun keyblank if you couldn't get a new one from the dealer. Looks like that's not the case with the newer models.

Hey thanks for the LED key offer! That would be nice to be "enlightened," but I have a feeling it is a different blank :-( Will do some more digging and post what I find.

Thanks again for your help!

Well....

I went to Home Depot, and for about two dollars, they made me a copy of my key for a 2001 Outback.

I has the following stamped on the key:

Axxess+

and on the other side:

38

Works all locks and ignition.

I believe the OP said he only had the valet key. The master key is cut differently. All he can get with the key he has is another valet key.

To the OP: Once you get the correct key blank for your car, this may help get the key code for your car if your dealer can't cut you an original master.

On the older Subarus and I believe the newer models like yours, the key code is stamped in the housing of the lock cylinder of the passenger side door. Removing the paneling (and other junk) and getting in there with an inspection mirror and flashlight should enable you to read the code and have a master cut.

Once you get a working master key, most any locksmith should be able to duplicate keys from that for $2 to $3 per key.
