Transmision Swap Auto to stick 86 XT

Recommended Posts

So I got this . I haven't even picked it up yet but I am heading down there saturday. So once I get the head back on I want to get rid of that auto trans. What parts will I need. Obviosly the transmission and shift linkage. Clutch master cylender? Flywheel? Sorry if I am retarted but I never really have attempted a project like this before.

if ya want to change the tranny, i would say yank the hole thing out.. engine and trans.. this allows you to put the engine back together much easier..

you'll need a transmission, flywheel, clutch, pressureplate, pedal assembly (inside) clutch cable, and all of the shift linkage and shifter..

when ya get a transmission make sure it is the same gear ratio as the rear end or you'll have problems.. the rear end gear ration can be seen by lookin under the back of the car at the rearend. there will be a sticker on it that says "3.70 or 3.90 or 3.70 LSD or 3.90 LSD". the LSD stands for limited slip differential. if it doesn't say lsd its an open rear end.. by looking at the pic of the car its prolly an LSD.

important part is to make sure the trans you put in is the same gear ratio..

good score too btw.. looks like a keeper..

you will also need the TO bearing , manual tranny mounts and driveshaft from a manual XT(not sure if the regular L-series shaft will fit)

You will either need to get 25 spline axles if you get the manual from a turbo, or keep the 23 spline axles the car came with and replace the rear diff if you get the manual from a nonturbo.

I live in McKinney, about 20-25 miles north of dallas, and I just did this swap on my wagon about 6 months ago. Let me know if you need more help.

Oh yeah.. being an automatic, unless it was specifically ordered with it, it won't have an LSD

Wow this seems like it is going to be alot harder than I thought. I can't do much right now gota wait till I get the car but I have about 5 junkyards that tell me they have the tranny. Junkyard dogs worked sapriseingly well. I will keep you guys posted on how everything pans out.

dont forget the driveshaft, as it is slightly longet than an at driveshaft. the front half that is.

you will need along with the tranny, the crossmember and its bolts. you remove 2 of the bolts on the frame, and the MT crossmember fits there

swap in the clutch pedal box and its cable. keep the diff that comes with your choice of tranny

a 5spd dual range, or pushbutton 5spd from a non turbo will fit your axles

no change to the rear axles, just swap the diff with the trans

get the entire clutch and flywheel assembly
