daddycoolj
The transmission will not engage reverse, problem started 2 days ago. car has 226,000 miles. First happened when trying to back out of a parking space, shifter moved but the car wouldn't. Moved the shifter back and forth and finally engaged. Forward gears work fine. Today it worked out off and on a few times but now refuses to do so. I have zero automatic trans service experience. I changed out the passenger side axle 3 days ago. I changed out the passenger side axle 3 days ago. this happened to my 95 leg after an afternoon of low low fluid. ( the rear seal went, shop replaced but the idiot didn't put any fluid back in, said the level looked good on the did stick.) i drove it 3 months with no reverse, then swapped in a 96 trans. check fluid level when hot with the engine running, both sides of the stick, the lower reading is correct. i'd check it again when cold, just to make sure the stick didn't fool you and the fluid is at least in the ballpark. the dip stick can be hard to read. start looking for a used trans. ps: mine never got any worse. nipper
Check the fluid level, add a conditioner, and cross your fingers. If that doesnt help, it wont get better on its own. It may not get worse, but pushing a car backwards gets tired really fast. nipper
greenleg88
will it even roll backwards if you push it when the shifter is in reverse? what about in neutral?
1-3-2-4
I had this happen on my 95 Impreza L FWD I first I noticed when getting gas one day when backing up to the pump on a little hill the car started to slip going to the pump.. so one day after work it did it when backing out on a level surface, so I went forward again and reverse again only to find out the car will no longer back up and I had to push it out with my foot which sucked... I later got rid of the car since it was pointless to put another FWD transmission in so... The funny thing is the car had no problems with any of the forward gears at all, and the fluid level was fine. that was the last of any Auto transmission for me. daddycoolj
will it even roll backwards if you push it when the shifter is in reverse? what about in neutral? It rolls just fine, reverse or neutral. so far I've been able to point it uphill to turn around by coasting backwards. I added a can of trans x about 20 miles ago so maybe by afternoon something good will transpire.
