Fox
I changed the coil, no luck, its the ign module. Sooo, I found an ND dizzy, how hard are they to upgrade? (from hitachi electronic to the nd)

zyewdall
BAD BAD BAD!!! I cannot find the right dizzy or electonic module anywhere, every single soob in the wreckers has a points system, even the newer ones they had!! Does anyone know of a compatible electronic module? I am desperate, I NEED my car on the road, today if possible! I need a car this weekend, desperately. I've never seen a suby with point and condensor ignition -- the oldest one I've had has been a 1982, and I think the NADA ones switched before then. However, you are in Austrialia? Your's might be different than we got here. So.... dunnno. I've not even had luck switching between the 2wd and 4wd distributors (perhaps one is the hitachi and one is the nippondenso?), so it seems to be fairly picky. I don't seen any reason why you couldn't change it back to a points and condensor distributor, but ignition systems are not my forte to say the least, and I may be completely off there. naru
By the way, I have pulsing light on the - when cranking. As long as the light pulses and the tach works while cranking, ignition module and coil primary is OK.Secondary winding might be shorted, bad wires, bad cap and rotor also possible. john in KY
But he posted there is no spark from the coil. That made me conclude there may be 12 volts running through the coil but there isn't enough voltage produced at the terminal to generate a spark. The on/off flickering light tells me the distributor is doing its job. But the coil has been replaced and no change. Just a mystery to me.
Fox
Has to be the ign module, I just have to find out if the 2wd nd dizzy will fit without modification, I dont want to go and spend 100$ on the parts and find they are not only useless, but my soob is still stuck in the driveway. :-\
TomRhere
Pretty sure the ND disty will be a straight forward swap. You should use the ND coil with it also, as there is a difference in the internal resistance of the coils and you could damage the disty module. Had the disty in my '85 BRAT die on me. Turns out that the magnet under that "C" shaped piece had shattered. Not sure what caused that to happen, but it's something you can check. Cougar
I have read through the posts on this problem and from what I see so far it looks to me that the main coil wire that ties to the disty may be bad. The original poster stated that the small test light pulsed on and off as the engine was cranking and the light was placed between the minus side of the coil and ground. That is exactly what a working ignition is supposed to do just as Naru stated previously. Those pulses mean that the primary side of the coil is being grounded intermittently and so that should induce the high voltage to the secondary of the coil. Check to see if you get spark out of the coil wire by removing the wire that ties to the disty end. Place the end of the wire near a good ground and see if you get a spark there when you crank the engine. If not, either the coil wire is bad or the coil itself has a bad secondary. You proved the primary side was ok because you had power on both sides of the coil. Current has a path through the primary windings when the minus side of the coil gets connected to ground by the module in the disty and that is a good thing.
