EJ Swap cleanup... were should these wires go?

Ok, after putting some good mileage on the car, I decided to take everything apart, and sort the wiring properly under the dash.

 

At the top of the list, was to hook up the VSS. I'm going to try to connect this to the back of my cluster to the "reed switch". As '86 carb'd cars don't have a VSS wire anywhere in the loom.

 

I also found these labeled wires that I haven't hooked up yet. What should I do with them?

 

Neutral switch

Inhbitor switch

Check engine light

 

I also plan to find the at/mt wire and ground it. Its my understanding this is what you need to do to designate a mt car.

 

Any other wires I should recheck to make sure its hooked up right? I'm trying to troubleshoot not passing emissions (fails at idle, not cruise), as well as some stuttering problems I have.

Hey there:

 

I used the reed switch in the cluster of my 84 brat and its worked great. I also strung a wire from the legacy ecu up to the pin on the back of my gauges for the ECS light. There was no bulb in there and the pin on the plug for it was empty, but i was able to rig it to come on. I never did hook up a neutral switch and I dont get a CEl code for it. I dont remember the inhibitor switch so maybe some one else can chime in on that.

 

I also want to ground out I believe it is pin 20 on plug B84 ( according to a post by numbchux yesterday). I would start with the CEL because you probably have a code there that will lead you in the right direction. Good luck with it.

CEL Light is a negative signal. not sure what car you have, but if there is no CEL light, you can take a positive wire and hook it up to a bulb and then connect it to the negative wire. You need to have a low wattage bulb. I think it's like 1.5 watts. If it's too high, like a turn signal bulb, it will burn out that circuit. Ask me how I know :rolleyes:

 

Neutral switch and inhibitor switch you can not worry about.

 

VSS is the reed switch.

yep, as mentioned, reed switch = VSS. I believe if you follow the wire on the EJ22 diagrams it's marked as a reed switch there too.

 

AFAIK, inhibitor switch is AT only. won't effect anything at all

 

neutral switch can be hooked up to a clutch switch or neutral switch on the trans (if your trans is the '86, it won't have it). if your ECU is properly designated "MT", this will throw a code.

 

on the '86 I did last summer (dhise has it now), I hooked the CEL wire to the signal wire on the ECS light on the dash (on the right side, by the charge light). polarity was the same, light already had power, just needed a ground signal (did the same with the oil light on the other side).

 

on my loyale, I just used a dash backlight from my parts pile and wired a light in the loom. it can be seen under the dash just as easily as the light on the EA82 ECU, but not easily while driving (at night you can see the glow on your feet...but it isn't annoying). it's nice not to have to look at it all the time, since I've never bothered to hook up the neutral switch.

 

 

 

I can't think of anything else, although if something else needs attention, it'll probably throw a code.....

Can I ground the Neutral switch? Or do I really need to rig a clutch switch up?

 

And do I just ground the MT/AT wire to make it MT?

 

no, grounding it will tell it that it's in neutral. it needs to be a changing signal (not sure how much it cares that the signal matches with the rpms....). I THINK your car should have a switch on the clutch pedal, I'm fairly sure my '85 did. otherwise, grab one off a later EA82. or hide the CEL and ignore it. it won't effect functionality at all.

on my swap i just grounded the neutral switch and it has been fine. and i never did figure out how to hook up the vss.

 

the only cel i have gotten has been on part throttle cruse it will trip on but then go away later or when the ignition is turned off so that says thats not a hard code.
