Ea71 Auto Tranny?

Recommended Posts

no offense but it sounds like a recipe for runner up next to the 1.6 diesel rabbit as about so slow as to be unsafe.

Hey, I have a 1.6 diesel rabbit, and it's actually about the same as my EA81 4x4 wagons. Not fast, but not that slow either. I've beat BMW's off the line (who weren't paying attention and didn't know I was trying....). Certainly faster than my toyota 2.2 NA diesel pickup... that's quite a bit slower, especially with a load of firewood. And, it's faster than the Chevy Cavalier my friend had too (fuel injected 1.9, with a super splushy automatic, and 140k miles on it when it finally died -- amazing POS)

FYI the SOA auto trannies were first mated to the 1400. The 1st tranny was disasterous. They quickly changed to another Mfg. and then had a more reliable base to create the 2nd and yet a 3rd automatic tranny for Subaru in 1974-5 model years.

Once had that 32k 1976 DL Automatic that now sits retored in Sweden. It was so old lady fresh it put you a little more into your seat when you punched the pedal and also had no problem doing 65+++ mph.

I'm actually looking for a good vintage automatic worth restoring or a drivetrain etc. to transplant into my '74.
