WoodsWagon
The last EJ swap I did I used an obd 1 harness out of a 92 legacy to run a ej22. My next swap I'm putting a EJ25 in a 86 T-wagon. I'm planning on putting a turbo on the EJ25, and running the AWD tranny out of my 92 legacy. I have an extra obd1 EJ22 harness and computer for a FWD auto EJ22. I could pull a harness from a 1998 outback, or a 98 forester, or a 95 legacy. I could try and source another one if there's a specific harness and computer that would be best, but that's money. What's the best pick for running a low boost turbo 2.5? I know people turbo N/A subarus, at least the OBD II ones and it seems to work out OK. Numbchux
the 98 outback or forester (assuming it's a 2.5) would be your best bet. the OBD II logic modules are much more capable of compensating for boost than the OBD I ones. although you'll still want to upgrade the fuel system. at the very least a rrfpr. and probably run a wideband so you can monitor AFRs to make sure you don't lean out under boost. kingbobdole
I'm gonna annoy you and say it's gonna go boom. 2.5's really are not that good with head gaskets as it is.
idosubaru
the 98 outback and forester have the exact same engine (EJ25) and harness, so take your pick. the 95 is entirely interchangeable between EJ22's and EJ25's, plug and play, so that's a fine option as well. phil has a good point, the EJ25 is a head gasket blowing (not too mention rod bearing loosing) maching, new headgaskets before installing is a good idea. an EJ22T or EJ22 is a better bet in some ways. WoodsWagon
I'm dropping the compression in the EJ25, so I'm doing headgaskets anyway. I'll go rip out an obd II harness.
WoodsWagon
The forester got shipped out accidently, so it was off the table, the outback was missing its ecu, and it was an automatic limited, so loaded with options. A 96 Legacy l with manual tranny and the engine and trans already pulled came in. I got all the harness, cluster, switches, and sensors (map. Maf, ignitor, cruise control bits and everthing for $40. Though I did have to work in shattered glass the whole time, the car had been packed with broken windshields. Took 4 and a half hours to get the complete harness out.
