EA82T Axles

I'm swapping a FT4WD transmission into a Brat and was wondering on the axles. Are ea82T axles 25 spline inner/outer or 25 spline inner 23 spline outer? I figured I'd just swap out the turbo hubs and be good to go right? I am going to keep the suspension stock for now, but in the future possibly the 5 lug setup. And what are xt6 axles? 25 spline inner/outer?

EA82 axles are too long. The outside splines are the same between turbos and non turbos. What you may have to do is put the ea82 inner cup on an EA81 axle. It's not too hard.

 

This is all hypothesized as I have never swapped an EA82 tranny into an EA81. But I know the axles are longer because the parts guys decided to give me an EA81 axle for my EA82 one time.

JB your going to need to find someone to make you some custom axles. The FT4WD tranny is 25 spline, and all EA81's are 23 spline. And the EA82T 25 spline axles are too long to work in the brat.

 

Best bet might be to cut some EA81 axles and EA82 axles in half, and have them welded back together. EA81 hub side, to EA82T tranny side... at the same length as a EA81 axle would be.

shouldn't need to cut.

 

Should be avke to simply swap the ea82T inner race, cage and cup onto the EA81 shaft.

 

Or split open the cases and swap the 23 spline stubs into the FT4wd tranny. That way you could use standard EA81 axles infinitely.

EA82T cups don't fit the EA81 shafts. You need the Impreza/Legacy 2WD inner cups IIRC.

I thought that EA82T cups fit ontop 2wd EA81 axles. I know there are some axles that don't fit, but I thought the EA81 2wd axles are fatter shafts and fit the EA82T cups?

 

At any rate, there definately are options for doing this.

 

Honestly, for me though, I would swap the stubs in the trans. Alot of work, but when you are done, you never have to make hybrid axles again.

i've done the RX FT4wd box into a brumby...i got a set of custom DOJ's made up to fit the brumby shafts to the RX stubs...cost me NZ$250 (about US$150ish) a few years ago.

 

can't see why you couldn't get the same thing done in the states....all the parts for it where off the shelf...most driveline specialists should be able to do it

It's the other way around - the 4WD shafts are larger on the EA81's. You need the legacy DOJ's to fit the EA81 4WD shafts. There's a post about it within the last few months detailing the exact combination. But the EA82T DOJ's don't fit *any* EA81 shaft - otherwise the conversion would be simple and obvious and few would even ask the question I suppose.
