Total newbie. I'm ready to move out of my DOdge Durango and get an OUtback. I'd like opinions on the new car market. Does anyone feel Subaru is as desperate to make deals as, say, some of the other makers? I'm not great at car negotiating. Awful in fact, but I've been trying to hold out. Today, the dealer told me I should buy by midnight because the dealer "incentives" will be over and they will not be getting more inventory. She said they probably will not offer incentives next month?

Hogwash? :-\

True?

Help. I want a new car and would like to take advantage of the 2k rebate, but.....I'd rather do more homework and hold out for the best deal.

 

Thoughts?

Subaru is selling everything it makes, so they are not cutting off thier noses in spite of thier faces to make a sale.

 

However an entirely new OB si coming out in 2010, so you may be able to get a deal on a 2009, but i am not sure. Sooby delaeers seem to be fairly fair in thier pricing, but hey, i cant negotiate either.

when it comes to business, my friend always says

"Everything is negotiable"!

 

Take your time and research the one you want and when you want to buy. 09 is a good time to buy a new car in general ........but there will always be another rebate so don't let them sucker punch you. You probably know, but end of the month, end of the quarter is always good for you. Use those to your advantadge.

When would the *end of quarter* be? Funny, they just called me back (at 9 pm) offering me more on my trade in. Wanting a CC $500 deposit to hold the deal till tomorrow. I just can't function on the fly like that. So I told them I would be in touch with them this weekend to see if they will still offer me the same deal.

 

Still today my car over heated and blew a hose. I think it's a sign!

End of quarter.... 4 quarters X 3 months = 12 months. Just like any other calander quarter. But thats in a normal economy, right now they dont care they just want to sell cars.

them calling you back and offering more tells you they have lots of wiggle room that they didn't give you the first time. you'd have to be joking to think that they've gotten anywhere near their limit. you have to play hard ball and it's not easy. take your time and don't rush, they have lots of room to play with. mostly on your trade in.

 

don't believe any of their sales tactics or if they "show you" their invoices and paper work, they won't show you that. if they do, it's basically a pseudo-invoice, made up just to show a customer and they've got more than one differing invoice.

 

there are some really short books you can read about buying a new car, and by book i mean it's like a pamphlet. might be worth an hour in the library or bookstore to read from folks that actually used to work in the business.

 

in general the best financial move you can personally make is to sell your car outright for as much as you can get and then negotiate. there's variances to that, but generally you can make out better that way. there's a LOT of slop if they're negotiating the trade in value.

Thanks everyone. SO, low and behold the sales person called today to say the THEY HAVE EXTENDED THE DEALER INCENTIVE till MOnday. Whew, Lucky me!

So, because I'm trying to do my homework, I called two other dealers. They both offered the same car as *dealer number 1* but for 3k LESS!!

 

Do dealer differ that much on thier inventory. I mean the Subie Outback Special Edition was running 25k, the other two dealers today gave me quotes of $21, 699.00 THAT a huge difference.

Walk into the service departments of each. If anyone is waiting for thier car, ask them how they like the service.

 

And yes it can vary that much.

 

The 1st dealer is just trying to get what he can get out of you.

Good for you! You just saved 3,000 dollars by following your gut.

 

I like to keep a transaction like this competive and businesslike, but in the end friendly. You may need a loaner car at some time or a favor in the future and if you act like a wongleflute, they will remember if it is a smaller dealer.

 

Work the numbers pretty hard and possibly work the final two against each other. You might say, dealer one has offered me the subaru for $1000 less than you, can you match that? Give them a date you are going to make a decison so they have a short end in sight and then try to stick with it .

 

Definately check out service and service policies before buying, although you can take your new subaru to any subaru dealer you want for standard post warranty work.

I just looked into this online. Is it better to wait for a new model or go for the 2009 deal. Both cars look nice. 2010 may be out of my budget.

Subaru's all-new 2010 Outback "Sport Utility Wagon" is arriving with a base price of $22,995 (*add $695 to all of the prices for destination and delivery), the same dollar amount that was adhered to the window of the outgoing 2009 model. The standard model is fitted with a revised 2.5-liter normally-aspirated flat-four rated at 170 hp and mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The stick shift can be swapped for Subaru's new Lineartronic CVT, but it will bump the base price up to $23,995.

 

 

Though i may suspect thats why you can get a good deal on a 2009.

Your best deal will be a brand new 2009--after the 2010s are on the dealer's floor. They'll be anxious to move the "old" models. Wait another month then go wheel & deal with them.

Take a look at this site that an internet manager in Seattle posts.

He lists the invoice value of each model as WELL as the rebates... and often times WHEN the rebate expire.

 

If you want a no-haggle deal you can try buying one through AAA, or your local credit union. Or Costco. Their prices are likely going to be 100-500 over invoice less applicable rebates.

 

I would not think it unreasonable if you can get one near invoice to take near trade in value on your durango if you trade it in. (kbb or NADA trade in value)

 

however if you can avoid trading in, sell it privately... you can save $$ that way.

 

As long as you dont buy the car at retail and take wholesale for your car, you are getting a halfway decent deal. If they want to sell you a car at retail, get retail for your trade. though dont expect them to give you retail for your trade if you pay wholesale for the car. Dont be afraid to walk, or take a copy of your deal to another dealer to make em beat it. :grin:

 

On the note of 2010 VS 2009. The 09 will likely be more troublefree and cheaper. Its the route I would go personally. The 10 will likely be nicer and more refined but more expensive (though it will have better resale) but since its a first year model... may have more quirks. And since I keep my cars for years and run them into the ground, I could care less about resale and more about how well its built and will last me.
