oh yeah, that's really annoying. wear some gloves and grab each side and keep wiggling it. it'll seem like you're not doing anything, but keep trying. rotate 90 degrees and try again.

a leveraging instrument placed behind it with some careful but stiff forceful nudges from behind helps too, but i would call that a last resort.

good luck, they're really annoying sometimes.

Rubber mallet is something that I try - of course I usually have the engine out. Then I progress from there.

But after is start to move it just takes patience.

As GG eluded to there is no real good place to pry against. SOmetimes I'll actually re-install the alternator bracket to try and use it.

I ended up using a three-jaw puller. It was actually assembled from three different ones: forcing screw from the first (others too long to fit), jaws from the second (others would slip), link bars from the third (to make it all work together). But cutting threads in the holes and using a steering wheel puller seems like the correct way to go if you got a stubborn one. With a puller, you also need to insert some sort of spacer that would bottom out in the crankshaft hole so as not to damage the threads.

Careful leveraging. The timing cover breaks easily.
