California SMOG : from Sconnie to Cali

Recommended Posts

 1st time poster & Subaru newbie

I recently just purchased my first Subaru, 92 Loyale 4WD 5-Speed, from Miles Fox here in Milwaukee. This is the first car I've owned that I have actually enjoyed to drive and work on. I love it! Brilliant engineering and easy to service just like the 70's Puch mopeds I'm so familiar with.

I am planning on moving from Milwaukee to Los Angeles soon and I highly doubt my Loyale will pass California's strict emission testing. I have my car registered at my parent's address in Wisconsin and plan on doing so for as long as I can.

My question: Do you think I can drive this Loyale in LA for a few years with my Wisconsin registration without having to worry about passing SMOG or getting CA plates?

Well I know it's missing the O2 sensor which could cause problems.

The reason I was asking is the exhaust just crapped out on my last night and I was toying around with the idea of running glass packs and a straight pipe... assuming I could somehow avoid any imperial entanglements by rocking my WI registration.

I'd be careful, cops here go extra hard on out of state plates. In boring towns cops will pick a random car and tail it for a few miles until they either se something amiss or you get so nervous that you make a mistake. The more squemish you are, the more likely you will have multiple citations. They ask you questions to trick you into admitting that you have been there for a while which carries some stiff penalties.

 that does not sound like the cops job, he should be fighting crime.

It actually is a crime to drive around long term with out of state plates so you could say they are doing their job by patroling for that.

Why not reinstall the o2 sensor and put a legal exhaust on it?

I believe in taking care of my cars, and I actually like knowing that they pass emissions. I find they run better and I take care of them more when I am required to pass. My cars get better mileage this way as well.

Check the law books but you may be entitled to not have california plates if you are temporary resident and some do live there for college or other reasons that may actually legally allow you to maintain Wisconsin residence and drive there completely legally. Just check and if this is the case you dont have to get a Cali drivers license either most likely.

Otherwise look for a smog friendly loyale in California to buy and bring it back to Wisconsin when you are done living there. The car will likely be completely rust free and you can use the one you got in Milwaukee for parts.

guess I should chime in on this one.

Emission is based on the year of the car. As long as it is per spec when it was new and not blowing any smoke and in overall good condition, you should pass. You will have to get the o2 sensor replaced b/c if it throws a check engine light while you are testing it, then you will fail.

Driving around w/non-cali plates is technically not legal. I think you have to register a car in state within 10 days of bringing it in. That being said, if you are headed to Cali for college and you stay within a college area, I doubt you will get hassled. They do have every right to pull you over for out of state tags and it might happen on occasion. PM jamal. He went to USC and for the longest time had Montana plates on his legacy.

In regards to getting an EA82 and then taking it back east or I guess to the middle of the country. EA82s usually go for sub $1000 in price. They are getting less frequent on Craigslist and in the junkyards. But if you do find one, they will most likely be completely rust free. The only exception in the Los Angeles area would be one from the local mountains, where they use salt.

Other than that, come on west young man. Be nice to have more old school soobieheads to hangout with.

this will definately get the attention of the police. More so in the beach city areas like Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes. If you venture south to Orange County, then Irvine cops are pretty jerky.

That is all you need to know. Period.

I got my 91 Loyale to pass NV smog, you're 93 (With O2 Sensor) should pass with no issues.

Granted I paid a little more for my tech to overlook my CEL...A six pack, not a real emissions issue. But really. Get it running right, pass CA smog and shove it to the 'man'.

Or, come up to Reno, I'll let you borrow my address and register it here ever year.

Meh. I suck at trying to stay within the Law.

I'm glad I asked for the advice of the USMB hive mind! I didn't know the cops would give me crap for my out of state plates. Best not be ridin' dirty then! :drunk:

This is my first foray into motor car self reliance. I drove little Ford coupes growing up but they were too complex for me at the time to figure out myself and fix. I've been into fixing up old mopeds for 4 years and now that I'm quite competent with those I figure a fixing up a Subaru moped hauler is the next logical step. So getting this thing to pass emissions seems like a big job but I'm up to the challenge.

rat fink: Even if I register it in Reno wouldn't I still get hassled by the Police?
