brus brother
90 Loyale auto 4WD with button on shifter. Too cold to check tonight but when I engage the 4WD, there is a squealing noise. I noticed that the alternator belt was loose this past weekend (too cold to fix) and am hoping that it is the source of the noise as it seems like where it's coming from but what would cause it to squeal only when 4wd engaged, where is the additional strain? The sound occurs whether the car is sitting still or moving and increases with RPM
GeneralDisorder
The pushbutton 4WD's use a vacuum line to engage the 4WD in the trans. There could be a leak in this system, causing rough idleing from the vacuum loss. This can change engine speed, and might cause the alt belt to squeel - just an idea of where to start. GLCraig
The pushbutton 4WD's use a vacuum line to engage the 4WD in the trans. That's only on manual transmissions with pushbutton 4wd. With an automatic, pushing the button activates a solenoid that opens a valve that controls the flow of fluid to a clutch pack. That clutch pack is what sends power to the rear wheels. My guess is that you have something binding the transmission; check the diameter of your tires if there is a difference in diameter between the front and back; that will cause the transmission to bind-up. also different brands or models of tires between fron and rear will cause problems too. brus brother
Nothing new about the tire configuration, sizes etc.. Again, the noise occurs whether or not the car is moving and increases with RPMs! Any other wise men out there in the desert??
GeneralDisorder
Oh! My bad - didn't see the Automatic part... Still - I wouldn't think it was tranny related - try changing the belt. GD
brus brother
Almost forgot, coupla' weeks ago I spilled some Dextron on the belt while topping off the power steering fluid. Doh. Wiped it off fairly well but, could this have begun the demise and stretching of the belt? Am I trying too hard for the idiot of the week award?
