floortom
Hi Ken from Portland here. I'm having problems locating a clutch for an 86 Subie Hatch. I've been sold the wrong one twice due to differences. Clutch disk is 8 7/8" Small spline Old sytle throwout bearing The first one they sold me was the right size clutch disk but I could tell the throwout bearing was for a different model and the spline size was too big. It measured 1". The second one they sold me the clutch disk was an 1" too small and it had the replaceable throwout bearing but it was too small. I called the Napa warehouse and other various places in Portland and the closest one I could find was 5 days away in New Mexico. I rented a trannty jack this weekend, and it sits there mocking me... Can somebody like Ritchie Rich or someone like him in the Portland area locate one for me - they have to be here. Failure 2 Pilot bearing is stuck. I bought a $44 remover but the jaws were just a shade too large so I filed it down so it would fit in the hole. Yet it didn't have enough to pull the bearing - it pops out. Tried the grease trick with no success. Is there a better puller or method I don't know about? Failure 3 Exhaust studs for the catalytic converter - one on each side broke off. After much babying and preperation they still broke off. What is the best method to remove them? Still about 3/4" of an inch stick out from the head. Thanks for any help in advance! 4x4_Welder
Order a clutch for an 83 or 84 model set up the same as yours- Most parts store computers see 85+ GL 1.8 as an EA82. Use a bit of heat, and a stud extractor on the exhaust studs. Use the kind that has three or four rollers inside and looks kinda like a spark plug socket. I have had good luck pulling pilot bearings with grease, Subarus have a huge pocket behind the bearing so it may take a few tries. I would recommend grinding a bolt down to fit the hole very snugly, then use a grease gun to fill the pocket. Use a needle fitting if the regular fitting doesn't fit inside the hole. GeneralDisorder
The first one you got was for an EA82. The second was for an EA81 2WD or 80 to 82 4WD's You need a clutch for an 84 4WD. GD

GeneralDisorder
The hatch is no different than any other post-82 EA81 4WD. They are all the same. I have never had any trouble getting the right parts when you ask for the the right year. It's a 225mm disc. Try Discount Import Parts on McGlaughlin Blvd. And of course the dealer can get you a kit easily. GD
