Kitfox Mike
My starter on my EA-81 has crapped out on me. I checked all the lines and I am getting full voltage to the solenoid and starter but the solenoid will not push the gear all the way to the ring gear, even when it is out of the bell housing. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

GeneralDisorder
Full voltage does NOT mean full current. You may still not be passing enough to get it going. The starters are easy to dissasemble and clean the contacts, replace the brushes, etc. But your problem is more likely to be the ignition switch/harness or the battery cables. As far as replacements - Subaru (as far as I know) still hasn't changed their starter design. EA81, EA82, EJ22, and EJ25 are all the same up to at least the late 90's - I know from experience. The really new stuff might be different but I suspect it isn't. GD
opus
I've had this happen before. Double check your grounds.

GD Starters from impreza era cars bolt up to ea81s? I didn't know that. very cool.
zyewdall
I've had this happen on just about every subaru I've owned. I just replaced the starter with a used one for $25 and it was all better, but you could probably also take it apart and clean the contacts inside and put new brushes in the motor (mine continued to click loudly, but the motor did not turn). Superrupair is where I get the used ones. Z
zyewdall
Also, it is fairly common for the start position of the ignition switch to stop working -- I've had that happen on three subarus too... my Justy has that problem now. I need to put in a pushbutton switch to start it (or get a new ignition switch, I guess..... )
