shuff Posted June 4, 2009 Share Posted June 4, 2009 i have a rx and am planing to do a 5 lug conversion using ej parts. i undersand the basics of getting the front to work (ball joint,struts etc) but am wondering beacause my gearbox stubs are of same spline count as the ej gearbox can i just throw a whole ej axle in there? or what is the lenght diff between the two axles ea/ej? (i can modify stuff because of access to a machine shop) car is a 86 rx sedan, and prob get the parts off a 1990 liberty (thats there model over here) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dr. RX Posted June 4, 2009 Share Posted June 4, 2009 (edited) You might be able to make it work on the front, but the rear is definately a problem. The rear axle are very different, especially how the attach to the rear diff. You might be able to work around this by using the same rear diff that you get the axles from, it will bolt up, be careful to make sure the rear diff ratio is the same as your tranny. That my be that hard part since most of the EJ series cars that I have dealt with, the highest ratio is 3.900, most are 4.111 and some are 4.444. The other part of the rear challenge are the hubs, I'm not sure if they will work or not and I don't have an EA car to look at to see if they would. If you got to my web site http://www.corkysrocks.net/SubaruPage.htm and look under projects, you'll see the conversion that I did about 7 years ago. I was one of the first in the Pacific Northwest to do the conversion and they have been many variation on that conversion by others since then. I realize the hardest part for you is finding XT6 part, if I remember correctly, Subaru did not import that car to Austraila. Caboobaroo Posted June 4, 2009 Share Posted June 4, 2009 This is a subject thats been hashed out many many many times over what parts to use from which vehicles. If you're planning on using the EJ parts for the front, you need the axles, knuckles, struts, rotors, and calipers. Ream the ball joint hole in the control arm with a tapered ream to accept the larger EJ ball joint and voila, done. Rear you need the crossbreed kit unless you can find someone to sell/send you the correct XT6 parts from the US. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
