fwd ea82 rear end replacement

Recommended Posts

1986 gl fwd wagon. Years of dump runs and overloading the car(using it as a truck) has taken it's toll. The rear wheel bearings are toast, and the rear shocks are pretty played also. Since I have to do both rear wheels anyway my question is what is the easiest fix. I have a donor car so I was just going to unbolt the upper shock mounts, disconect the brake lines, unbolt the crossmember assembly and roll the whole thing out. I plan to just bolt the whole thing back up in my 86 (wheels and all.) Has any-one done this, is it just a matter of 8 bolts and the brake lines......or is the rear crossmember welded to the body?

Nothing is welded - it all unbolts just as you surmise. Should be simple if both are 2WD. Although personally I would just swap the trailing arms and the shocks. This gives the opportunity to go through the brakes - the shoes are very inexpensive, and it would be a shame not to since you have to bleed the brakes anyway.

the rear end is all done. The only issue is alligning the rear wheels. when I get up past 65mph the rear end shimmies a bit. Is there a method for adjusting camber and toe in/out on the rear end?

i say ask arround about the alignment, a good place will do a decent alignment and not charge and arm and a leg....unlike les schwab.

place back at home charged $30 for a 4 wheel alignment and they are always spot on.
