Woogy
An 85 GL completely stock? Just replaced the radiator about two weeks ago, and an alternator and clutch a few months back. It has (I think) a bad head gasket, really leaky exhaust, and I'm not sure what it is but it just started sounding like a harley, or a derby car. The CV joints are going bad and make noise when turning, and the back left tire makes some noise sometimes... Also, a lot of the hoses are disconnected, as I have no clue how they go originally. Other than that, the car is great and I've been driving it for 3 years and has only broken down on me once when the alternator went out. The body is pretty straight except a few places here and there, and one tiny rust area the size of a quarter on the hood. The interior is also nice. Thanks, Justin
bheinen74
descriptions on these old cars are not enough. pictures are required for the outside and inside and engine bay for anyone to determine anything.
baccaruda
There are a lot of old subarus in your area. You'd be lucky to get $500 for it with the problems it has. The plus side is that most of them would be inexpensive to fix.
Indrid cold
Not much... guessing $200 tops (interior better be nice, no wires dangling and clean).... in my book, but I am cheap.., I just offered $50. for something close to what you have (prob. won't get it but it's a try) the issues that you described are an easy fix for the most part, I hope your not giving up on this car just because you don't know how to work/fix them, alot of people on the board live in your area + this site could help breath some new life back into that little car of yours... my .o2 cents. GeneralDisorder
Couple months ago I got a free '93 legacy with a bad alternator. Clean, straight, automatic. Gave it to my mom. Last EA82 I bought was an 86 4WD D/R sedan. I drove it home for $100 - it had a few mechanical issues but nothing that prevented it from being driven long distances in the hot sun - I drove it from Portland to Yakima and back in the summer. Just to give you an idea. I'm cheap though and I'll just wait for a deal that suits me. Problem is - people like us are your only market. With overheating problems like that you aren't going to attract buyers that are looking for reliable transportation and are willing to pay a little bit to get it. If you want a few dimes to rub together for this thing you need to fix it first. GD

I am going to sell it if I can get a loan for a new car, because I don't have the cash upfront to pay for the problems that it has. That is the reason why I'm coming here, because I know someone here would love to take this and turn into something really badass. If I had the time and money, I would be the one making something badass, but I'm lacking on both of those haha. GD: This car can drive for long distances as well - I have driven it multiple times from Federal Way to Port Angeles and to Forks and back, with no problems. And that was back when it had an oil leak from the valve covers and a leaky radiator/water pump, and now it could make it there no problem. Flowmastered87GL
as is on here, about $200, maybe if you were lucky you could get $500 on craigslist for it.
Niku-Sama
no even on craigslist. take into consideration i got my 90 AWD turbo loyale wagon for $300 with ticking lifters and i fixed it with some seals. there are alot more of them on craigs list, i have been keeping an eye because my aunt wants something cheap. last night i checked out a few on craigslist one in seattle with some stuckers on it, dent in the back hatch broken running light, needed front cv's and some other minor work, asking $300, another only needed passenger side cv joint has red hood and fender from vandals for $200 i think it was, there was more. then theres the 96 outback for $200, i dont know whats up with it but it soulds like a engine and 5 lug donor to me
zyewdall
I am going to sell it if I can get a loan for a new car, because I don't have the cash upfront to pay for the problems that it has. Whenever I've looked at this, the monthly payments on the new car come to the same as the total repair costs of the old car in about 3 or 4 months, if you have the time to put into repairing the old car. The head gaskets are the worst thing you've mentioned. That's only about $100 to fix (and a long weekend) if you have tools, and the CV's should be replaced soon if they're clicking loudly -- but wait another month for that, and you've got another $200 there. Then in another month, another $200 for an exhaust. Pretty soon, paying $200 a month into repairs and it will be all fixed -- instead of paying at least $200 a month for several years. Unless you want a new car...
zyewdall
Is this an EA81 or EA82 engine? Hatch or Wagon GL? The head gaskets should be alot easier on the EA81 than the EA82. The EA82 can be done in the car... but it's a pain because of the clearances. EA81 should be a breeze. Z

Yeah and they would all have tons of rust holes and every bolt you tried to turn strips or breaks.

Yo'J
But everybody here drives some fancy new car and all the old ones look top. Warshingtons big economic center, here, thrives on that false economy. You wont look cool at the office driving a beater. Real Warshingtonians dont care but the implants fall into the clique-y new toy routine. I say if you have a good interior, keep the car. Thats hard to find. The longer cars stay on the road the better for our future. PAP sells axles for 18+bucks and the heads aren't hard if even I have done it. Niku-Sama
you forget the people who drive the old beat to hell cars that run amazingly well crowd. ya know, those funky frumpy rusty wagons and hatchbacks that pass you in the lane just right of the car pool lane. the cars that when you pass some one you get the look of...."what the hell this guys passing me?" GeneralDisorder
the cars that when you pass some one you get the look of...."what the hell this guys passing me?" I am only that guy about half the time anymore. Still drive my '83 hatch several days a week and it's definately a "beater with a heater". Rest of the time I'm in the sweeet '91 SS. I love my Turbo! zyewdall
the cars that when you pass some one you get the look of...."what the hell this guys passing me?" I kind of want to get the EJ22 engine in the EA81 wagon for that.... so every once in a while I can pass the big shiny SUV's that think they can run down the old beat up subaru....
