idosubaru
i asked you a few questions when you were talking to me via PM - can you answer those? you didn't mention the spark situation to me before, is the check engine light on? miles and how old are the wires/plugs? idosubaru
check engine light? brand of spark plug wires? how many miles on plugs? i was asking about the cam sprockets (the wheels you line up for the timing belt to go around), not the cams themselves. did you remove those - they have to come off to replace the cam seals, which most folks replace on a job this big. john in KY
what other things have i missed with orig prob of underpower( no accl power, no pwer going up hills , floor and tops out at 30 mph ? ) this car is driving me crazy any help appreciated . Grossly retarded timing and/or a clogged exhaust will cause this. 99 is too new for me to know much about but seems to me there must be some way to adjust the ignition timing. davebugs
Answer GG's question about the BRAND of plug wires. If you did I missed it. Going out on a limb it may be the alternator. They do funny things on Suby's. You loose top end. Almost like fuel filter or cat is clogged. SOme of the symptoms that you described. There was a recent threat here. Easy enough to remove and have checked. Also what brand of timing belt? I use Dayco and they don't seem to line up exactly on DOHC 2.5's
ron917
Grossly retarded timing and/or a clogged exhaust will cause this. 99 is too new for me to know much about but seems to me there must be some way to adjust the ignition timing. No way to adjust ignition timing, the computer does it. However, if the knock sensor is bad, the computer will grossly retard the timing. The car will have no power at all (feels like a plugged cat). Knock sensor is a common problem (they crack), but it will throw a code and set the CEL. It can be intermittent, but when it's acting up, the CEL should be lit. dwitsman
Thanks to all who replied checked resistance on plud wires 3 read 900, 1 read read 1400 ohms, thinking maybe I fubared the engine when set back cam timing one mark , ( possible sparking noise valves hitting??) Yes using dots and hash marks, new plugs & wires (plat plugs when did rebuild) SO close but yet so far, had the thing milled to spec , put in the special new and improved hg and , but lacked any pickup wires new ( o'riley house brand, plugs new when did rebuild less than 500 miles ago).. got blue smoke now, so rings shot ?? got so much time & $$ in this baby .. don't know whether to give up and take my losses or TRY ??? can't locate a EJ25 junk yard engine within 500 mile for less than 1000 $ In Indpls IN , if anybody has any leads let me know , ideas ?? Louisville, KY has a 96 Legacy but that's a dice roll as to whether it's a EJ25 or a 2.2 and if it's still there, of course they won't tell you anybody in Louisville going to Pic a part and want to take a look ?? I've gotten different opinions on whether the 2.2 swap will play well with the computer , know it will fit run etc but .. will it be RIGHT and do you need to replace computer ?? Guess I 'm a glutton for punishment picked up a 97 OBL ..with EJ25, ( needs a engine rebuild, got it from kid who forgot to put oil in, runs but knocks bad, & needs a radio ...kid LOST it ?) $1000 OBO , SO if you have any leads on 1 EJ25 either need 2 Ej25s or a buyer for the 97 ,guess i need 2 ... or a straightjacket (ha..):banghead:
davebugs
A 2.2 swap on the 97 is easy. On the 99 a little more plumbing on the EVAP stuff since the canister is a different place. The 99 has 4 "extra" bolts/nuts to mate the engine and tranny but doesn't effect much really. Do some searching.
