changing crank pulley /timing belt- please advise

159k miles on automatic 97 legacy L (2.2)

 

so i pulled the pulley. i have a new one now..

just for references, this is what everything looks like...

does the cam gear need to get replaced as well?

 

does anyone think that key can just be straightened out or something... some trick.. ive never changed a timing belt, would need help or a walk through... plus get someone to help

 

the crank seal is leaking too i believe, so if the timing belt came off, i would probably make it a day project with a friend to change everything.

 

 

any experience tips or advice is appreciated.

From the pics:

1) You need a key

2) Can't tell for sure, but it probably wouldn't hurt to have a crank sprocket. The crank nose (especially the keyway) might have sustained damage, but getting things further apart could be necessary to tell. There are ways of dealing with that possibility.

3) The timing belt looks to be in rough shape. Besides changing it, there are other parts (idlers, tensioner, possibly water pump) that should probably be done at the same time. There are lots of previous threads here discussing that.

When (not ''if'' :)) the t-belt gets changed, be sure to check for loose back plate screws on the oil pump, since that can cause the crank seal to leak.

i know that no one searches there first, including me, but it might be easier to post a search phrase or link in response to all of the first timers questions. and the questions about ''i just did my timing belt and now my engine doesn't run right?"

Thanks John. To be honest, I haven't checked whether those links are in the USMB repair manual. If they're not, and someone would like to add that info, perhaps the additional links for the 2.5 DOHC in post #6 of http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=100489 might also be included.

thanks for all the great info. just for reference the car has 160k miles, automatic

 

 

ive been looking at an ebay kit. and it said somethign about up till 2/97 and anything from 3/97 and later will not fit.

what is that referring to? the tensioner style? this is what it all looks like

also, can someone confirm this:

along with the ebay kit, i should also be getting the oil pump o ring, crank seal, waterpump, w/p gasket, and thermostat.

what about a new tensioner, crank sprocket?

 

the cam seals were just done 12k miles ago.. as was the belt.... but does anyone think it should be done again just because its all so accessible.

 

Also, does anyone think that crankshaft is ruined because of badly the key is shifted? thats my biggest concern at the moment...
