92-94 turbo legacy towing & no start

Recommended Posts

i may have a chance to pick up a turbo legacy. the guy said it was running fine and he went to start it and now i doesn't start. he said it's not fireing. where would be a good place to start looking.

i found out yesterday that when it didn't start it was towed about 20 miles on a dolly with rear wheels on the ground. he said it's a 5 speed awd. when i told him he can't tow it like that he said he was told it would be ok. what kind of damage was probably done. it has a flawless body and if it now needs a trans. i may be able to get it cheap. are the transmissions the same as the n/a cars of the same year.

if it was damaged it would probably be the viscous coupling, some times referred to as the center diff. it's replaceable. if you do need a trans, there may be a very slight difference in the 3rd gear for some years and models, but more likely the final drive ratio. search "trannychart" and use the number off of the bell housing at the starter and you can find matching trans from other years.

No - the turbo 5 speed is much more like the later WRX tranny. The clutch design makes it very difficult to use an NA tranny with them. The SS was the only Gen 1 Legacy that used the hydraulic pusher-type clutch as found in the later USDM turbo cars. Final drive ratio is 3.9 on the SS.

The guy should have towed it with all 4 wheels on the ground atleast.

Interesting that it won't start now though! Hopefully the tranny was in neutral maybe the timing belt broke or skipped a few teeth.
