zukiru
so my 111k thousand mile tranny arrived with a screw driver broken off in the roll pin/axle area (the inner cup still on it) and the side plate loosened apparently the guy that took it out of the car was retarded. I need to set the one side plate tranny looks great other wise going to look for it in the FSM downloads but I have had some trouble with them not working right on my computer (they corrupt?!!) anyway looking for real world knowledge of the job. what gets measured to set the side plate? bheinen74
to set the side lash, the original turns out from being snug is needed. You need to source another non molested tranny and then count the number of turns out it is and hopefully set yours the same as the unmolested one. you will be playing with the unknown and it will either work or work, but for not very long. If they had the cap off, it will probably need the new inner seal and orings, as they don't survive dissassembly that well. both side caps play a part on both sides as they hold the guts centered. have fun. Actually, every gearbox is different. This is why the backlash is adjustable. I've found its not incredibly critical, A mate of mine change his gearbox because of bad synchros and when we got it out one side was loose and you could wobble the diff, it also had the hook bolted on holding it there so it must have been like that for a long time (he put over 20k km on it like that). The box made no noises and drove fine. Just do it up tightish but not so there is any feelable friction from that bearing cap.

GeneralDisorder
Since the other side wasn't moved, just screw the one side back in till it's tight enough that there is say... less than .005" play in the shaft and call it good. The hypoid gear differential is strong enough to handle it being out by less than 5 thou and the tapered roller bearings used for the output stubs are about impossible to kill at the RPM's they are being used for in that application.
