Safari Snorkels..?

Anyone know which or if any Snorkels will work on an the older soobs? I know they make some for OBs, Foresters and Bajas down in AU, just was wondering what people have done (Besides make their own out of PVC pipe) Lol..

 

I think i'll look awesome aswell as functional incase the road floods in low spots. But I've never seen a subaru stall in the water.

I doubt seriously they make them FOR any of the older models, but if you look really close, you can get their design down pretty easy.

 

And if your really set on the Safari Snorkel look, just buy the top piece and make the rest from either exhaust pipe or go cheap like me and use ABS plastic.

 

The only real "secret" IMO is how they made a gap between the walls of the top "snorkel" piece and the pipe that goes into your hood, keeping excess rain from being funneled directly in.

Hmm, yea I prolly would use a plastic type pipe. Oh yea you can just buy the top piece. One that go's thru the hood! :eek: I was thinking bout the kind that mount to the fender.

 

Anyhoo, just seeing whats what :) Hey if we keep adding all the $.02 we can get a buck Lol..

now my $0.02.....(you asked for it)

 

snorkels are NOT designed for water crossings

think about it, the engine will go under before the snorkel

they can help if you set up the vehicle with other preparations for deep water crossings

i have heard a lot of horror stories of people thinking that if they have a snorkel they can go though water (think hydrolock)

 

BUT

 

snorkels are excellent for getting cooler, cleaner air into your engine if you drive in a dusty environment, they take the cleaner air from the top of the windscreen - thats why rally cars have them.

also great if you do a lot of convoy type drives in a club of something - always in the dust.....

 

i would recommend a snorkel of any kind for a off road vehicle - anything is better than nothing.

 

the best would be a bowl type precleaner on the top - like a tractor

then the air would be even cleaner before it got to the air filter

PVC or ABS works great and can look OK on an off roader

Stainless pipe looks wicked but is expensive

 

Safari is not the only company to make snorkels either - check all the Australian 4x4 stores

thanks for the clarification on that... I mean, I know you need a good snorkel in addition to other things for water crossings...

 

I was thinking I wouldn't benefit from a snorkel because I don't plan on water crossings, but after reading your post it seems like a good idea for my off-roader...

here's SubaruJunkie stalled mid-stream... he hit it too fast and flooded the disty...

Yes indeed, the main reason for my snorkel is because I wanted dust protection, not only for the week-end drive but I lived where there were as many gravel roads as paved.

 

Also don't forget the all important off switch for your radiator fans. If your going to cross into deep water it's not going to be good to hear a water warped fan blade chewing through the radiator! :dead:

 

Come to think of it, I have yet to finish waterproofing the rear diff, disty, trany dip-stick, engine dip-stick and oil fill cap. As you can tell, water crossings aren't really high on my list. I'm more concerned on having some preparation done for if it becomes necessary.

 

Oh, and if your wanting that "Factory" look coming out the side of the fender with a non-PVC/ABS look, plan on spending about $100+ just for the top and elbow unless you get really lucky on a used pair.

 

The only reason mine comes out of the hood is because there is less fender room on my brat, I didn't want something else to catch on branches, AND I had a spare hood in-case I didn't like how this snorkel turned out.

 

There's another $ 0.02 for you. :drunk:

I just bought the top "head," part of the safari snorkel on-line and then had my buddy down at his muffler shop fab up a 3" snorkel to go where the old PVC one used to be coming out of my fender. I used some door trim to put around the hole in the fender and then used a K&N Apollo enclosed "in-line," air filter mounted up high underneath the hood. It's great since you can't see the snorkel from inside the car. It pulls colder cleaner air, but my intention is not to do river crossings. I will need to do more water proofing if I wanted to do anything more than couple feet deep of water such as a creek.

Yes very true, I mean the oil is going to get water in it and such (Plus whatever is in the water, Sand!) Anyhoo, I guess I was just thinking of the look aspect of it lol. I like how Safari vehicles look and I like Australia! Anyhoo enough rambling.

If I recall correctly it was around $75 (new) including shipping. I know that isn't cheap, but I have seen them from time to time selling for about $50 used on eBay. I went with the 3" head.

Oh thats not bad for new, I was looking at some a last year (Just glancing) and the ones I found were $120!

Thank you! Maybe I'll rig up a snorkel some day, I'd like a bull bar first (Like the ones ppl put on EA82s in AU) replaces the entire front bumper. I only find sites that are ".AU" I guess they don't sell things like that in the U.S fo Subarus.

Here's a couple pics from AA's site showing the Safari brand side piece I was talking about:

So, if your not bothered by having the elbow from either 3" exhaust or ABS pipe coming out from the fender, saves you some $$$. I mean if you really wanted too, especially with a custom piece of exhaust, I am sure you could have them shape it to fit snug to the fender, and it would be tricky making ABS do that too, but it wouldn't be as strong.
