eventoday
hello, I have an 01 outback with 214k on it. I have been noticing a metal sounding clank when i hit bigger bumps. Sounds like it is coming from under the the middle of the car. i have looked under the car but haven't noticed any missing bolts or anything that looks unsecure. I know this is kinda vague but any ideas? could it be anything to do with the transmission:slobber:? thanks jake
idosubaru
Can you give any more info? 01 outback - H6 or EJ25? Probably something benign if you don't have any other issues. My first thoughts are heat shields (very common noise makers) or front struts, at that mileage they could easily need replaced. Of course typical ball joints and tie rods should be checked as well, looking in particular for broken boots/leaking grease.
davebugs
Hey - you need to start more threads! A lot of times when this happens and the struts look good it's the mounts. Infact I believe GG just had an issue with mounts.
eventoday
sorry I forgot that made a 3.0. but mine is the ej25. Its definetely not the heat shields. I know that sound pretty well. Its a more solid sounding clank than that.

tcspeer
Check the big bushing at the back of the control arm, it is bolted up with two large bolts. It has a rubber bushing in it, if that bushing is leaking grease out that may be your problem. When these go bad you will also get a big clunk sound when you turn around on the highway. Also check your transmission mount.
