TheSubaruJunkie
Arived back at home around 6:30pm today with the new project. She's a 1978 DL Wagon, but almost fully loaded. Small problems consist of non operational Speedo, Blower motor (or heat for that matter). No FWD, driving in 4WD on the rear diff right now. Pictures can be seen here: http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo14 Its got a fair amount of rust, but nothing that can't be removed. Not sure if I want to restore it or just get it registered and use it as the new daily driver. -Brian
DerFahrer
Very nice Junkie! I personally would make a restoration project out of it, while it's a daily. Yes it can be done, that's precisely what I'm doing with my Legacy right now Keep the wagon as your mods car/off-road beast/beater...
TheSubaruJunkie
Yeah, thats decided I'll never get rid of my lifted wagon. The hardest part about restoring it is getting it past California emissions. The exhaust is shot, and the PVC valve must be bad too, cuase it has a hard time keeping the oil inside the crankcase. -Brian

That's a given How good would a set of exhaust gaskets (manifolds, flange, etc.) and some exhaust repair putty be for this particular car? Or is it too far gone? Trailduster
I love that 78!!! I think a 78 wagon is more rare than a 78 brat. I see Gen 1 brats all the time here in Oregon/Washington. But I never see those stage 2 wagons.
moosens
Congrats. Be sure to remind me about the '78 FSM later in the week.
NV Zeno
Yup, it's a sweet car (I met it today). What impressed me most was the condition of the upholstery, particularly the driver seat.. no rips or tears. Very unusual, even for a car half it's age. TheSubaruJunkie
What impressed me was the fact I could keep up with NV Zeno the entire way home. Without a speedo, i have no idea how fast we had that lil 1600 going. -Brian
GLCraig
Brian, Just a heads-up on your transmission, it's very likely that it has a broken pinion gear. The pinion gear is the week spot in the EA71 transmission.
TheSubaruJunkie
What does the pinion gear do? And how would i know if it was broken? The tranny fluid looked real creamy. I will have to drain it and replace it. I have a lead on a Gen1 D/R Tranny, and the bellhousing that will mate it to a EA81. Not sure if I wanna swap all that in, or keep it stock... but its a possiblilty -Brian

torxxx
that car is awesome.. I wish there were some Gen1 soobs in Alaska.. I only see EA81's running around.. Wait, and one like yours junkie, but it was trashed.. someones rally wagon with no care given What'd you pay for that?
TheSubaruJunkie
I think I spent about $20 for fuel, and also got some air freshener's... other than that, the car was free. Just had to drive it home. -Brian

TheSubaruJunkie
Thanks Dave... and goodluck. For all those who dont know... Mendo Dave is the one who hooked me up. His friend is the one who had this car, and from what I can gather he's the 2nd owner... 1st owner being a relative of his. Dave also was kind enough to store the car at his house for the past 3 months until I could make room for it here. Thank Peter again for me, and let him know the next time he see's this car, it will look like it just rolled off the factory line.... (hopefully). -Brian
