1990 loyale blower motor question

Recommended Posts

First post on the USMB. I have read a bit in the last week lots of great information.

I recently became the owner of 2 1990 subaru loyales and I am getting one of them ready for the road. The car is in pretty good shape and I have all the rust on the run and winding down on the body work. Replaced front wheel bearings. Since it is nearly ready for the road I decided to take care of that lovely mouse smell so I just got done tearing into the blower motor, Air conditioning exchanger and heater core.

While cleaning parts and inspecting I noticed that there is a black box attached to the blower motor. If you look at the inside of the blower motor you can see that there are three coils attached to this box. One of the coils is broken on mine.

My question is what does this part do?

Thanks

Jonathan

Welcome to USMB!

The black box is the Coil Pack for the blower motor, it is for the fan speeds, now since one of the coils is broke you'll only have 1 or 2 fan speeds, I replaced mine a few years ago, cause the porclin was cracked/broke and so was one of the coils, it was only $24 at the dealer IIRC. It has two screws that holds it to the blower motor casing. then it'll pop out.

Hope to see some pics of the wagons!

The coils are made of special wire and have resistance which changes the voltage to the motor and thus the speed change. They can also handle a lot of heat but do break down after time. Whenever the blower doesn't work on some speeds other than high the resistors are the first suspect for the trouble.

Hi Tom and Cougar.

Thanks for the information. I plugged the heater motor back in laying on the floor and verified that the fan doesn't work on the lowest setting. It was the smallest coil that was broken. It either burned out or the population of mice that were living in the area broke it. I will be putting the blower motor resistor back in as I can't see spending $50 so that I can have the lowest fan speed back. It is likely that the lowest speed will burn out first again anyway. If a man knew the right resistance he could solder a resistor back into the resistor pack. I'm not worried about it.

I was going to post some pics of the work I am doing on the car, but apparently I can't attach files to messages until a certian number of posts or length of time.

I took pics of the body work with fiberglass, dow great stuff, and bondo.

Also I took a pic of the puller I constructed for getting the stearing nuckles off the shafts.

Thanks for the help.

Jonathan

Oh wow its $50 now! I thought it was cheeper when I bought mine? (Maybe I did pay the same price) Anyhoo, your luck its only one speed, only the highest spee worked on mine.

As for attaching picutres, you can open a Photobucket account (Free) and upload pictures to that then copy the pictures IMG code and post it during a message, that will allow for the picture to show full size in your message. :)

Looking forward to seeing the work!

-Tom

The fuse for the blower should be with the rest of the fuses in the fuse panel. There is also a relay in the circuit and is a fairly high failure point. I'm not sure how to remove the motor if that is what you are asking. It is mounted under the dash area. If you suspect the blower is bad I suggest you check it out first by applying power directly to it while it is in place.
