Seems like the structure should be stronger compared to a wagon, since all that rear part is still intact. Where are you gonna get windows for the B pillars?? The Beast I Drive Posted July 21, 2009 Share Posted July 21, 2009 Well, Robbie brought his rig out to the shop tonight, and I made quite a bit of possitive progress on it. First off, it is going to end up being the 3rd gen Brat that Subaru never made, but should have, I was able to convince Rob that the Brat look was a lot smoother than the Ute idea he had... So far we got a Wagon hatch tacked in as the back wall, but the window is HUGE in comparison to where the bed sides are gonna end up, so the glass is gettin tossed and the back wall will be modified to fit a Gen 1 Brat window I had layin around.... The work to actually make it look like a Brat is about 30 percent done, but the actual fab work to make it nice is about 10 percent done... My Lincoln Weldpak 100 is a Arc, I was thinking of converting it to a Mig, I've heard its a little easier to use then an Arc. Sorry for chattering on and on. Anyhoo, Rob. The Beast I Drive Posted July 22, 2009 Share Posted July 22, 2009 At the moment, the rear wiper doesnt work, I took all the wires out of the hatch before I tacked it in... Im pretty sure the plan is to remove the wiper motor though, the rear window is so diabolically huge in comparison to what the bed will be when its done, we talked about blanking out the stock rear window with sheetmetal and making a new opening fitted to a stock Gen 1 Brat rear window that I have layin around, which will also allow for the installation of a slider in the future.... The remains of the hatch will get cut off just below the wiper arm, and Im going to graft in a section of backwall from a 70's F-250... I still need to build up the bed sides as well, Im planning on recreating them to fit Gen 2 bed trim on, as I have a good set that would definitlely complete the look of this rig and really make it into a Brat. Im using a Miller 35 wire feed machine (mig) for the welding, I would be using my dad's Miller 135 machine but its at work, and I dont want to go get it... Its nice not having it here cuz there is that much more room... From the pics you can see how cluttered the shop is, and that was after I cleaned it... Unless you are really good with a stick welder and have 1/16" rods, I would not attempt something like this with a stick machine. Robbie did on his first attempt, and anyone who seen it can tell you it was NOT pretty... Looked like someone threw a bunch of oatmeal over a piece of swiss cheese... We also talked about a 4" lift and bigger tires, I think 30" Big Horns would look damn straight on this rig, or maybe some TSL Super Swampers on black 6 lug Blazer rims, but thats a ways off yet... -Bill Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was just wondering for smaller things (Patch job, making home made bumpers, exhaust and such) I figure a Mig would be better then a Arc. Back half of the fenders are EA81 and front half are EA82. yeah ea82 is wider and i think someone tryed puting ea82 fenders on that brat. Twitch de la Brat Posted July 23, 2009 Share Posted July 23, 2009 Well, I prefer the quads, they look more rugged. I think the single lens looks too generic. Plus, the quads can be separately aimed, so you can set your low beams to aim below the fog line, but have the high beams aimed directly out in front of you. Also, if you crack a lense, you don't have to go to the junkyard to get a new one. Back on topic, if I welded that it would as beautiful as a pine beetle ridden tree with a knot running throught the middle of it, aka, Horrible!!! :-\ So are you putting anything in like those sweet nissan windows? I would just put a flat piece over the plate part on the former hatch so its all smooth and call that back wall good. Insert some windows in the triangles, trim the inside and top of the bed, and its done "that green and flag though, still throwin me" oh, I second that... though I live over on the other side of the cascades... Idk if they're a member, I wasn't when I saw it. It appeared that they took and stripped the interior from behind the rear seats back and welded the lower part of the hatch. Then cut it off all the way around at the level of the bottom of the rear window up to the seats. Finally they welded a sheet of steel directly behind the seats. With a tint, it'd be fine - and the washer wiper defroster is a bonus Smoothing over the license area/handle is a good idea - I had an off the wall idea; would that make enough space (if you cut into tit from the inside and used the hatch thickness plus the 'pocket' created by the new license area cover) to mount a dashboard glove box right in the middle of the back wall? - up high too - easy to reach from either seat. subaruguru Posted July 24, 2009 Author Share Posted July 24, 2009 ok so i had to move my tent trailor the other day and decided i am keeping the BIG back window i can see everything it made backing up a breeeze. also rear wiper is gonna be gone i am keeping the rear defrost tho the lower half is going to get cut off and then replaced wit ha flat peice from an old truck bed or something simaler with the rigges.
