EMPI Axles w00000t!!

I just put a set of the EMPI axles on my brat and WHOA!! what a difference! No problem getting them through the hubs, not need to use my "customized" plastic pipe to get them all the way through! :brow: Just a light tap or just went home by hand. :burnout:

 

I have used mostly the off-brand remands with the lifetime warranties, but I will no longer now that I am spoiled with the EMPI's! :Flame:

 

Too bad they don't make them for the rear axles too, oh well, I have never had trouble with those wearing out anyway. :-p

i didnt know they dont make the rear axles...

 

So far Ive had good luck with my EMPI front axles in my brat... Only comlpaint is the boot rubs just slightly on the steering shaft from the rack... But not enough to burn through.

 

I get mine from Triangle Autoparts in Yakima, so Im sure any place in Spokane that sells VW parts can get you EMPI axles for your Subaru Brian... Triangle deals all the imports, European and Japanese, and has lots of VW speed parts in stock...

Best part is the warranty. I keep blowing them up (the little needle bearings in the DOJ tend to shatter) and Discount Import keeps handing me new ones. :)

 

Though at this point they think I'm drag racing it and give me a funny look..... :rolleyes:

Reality is I never go much over 3 grand and my engine is too worn out for anything but slug like performance.

 

Love 'em just wish the DOJ was designed different instead of three roller bearings with tiny needle sized bearings inside. (I've had 'em apart, lots of free play right out of the box)

Not sure. Don't do alot of tire spinning even when wheeling. I'm more of the idle down the trail easy going type. And I mean come on, EA81 with 316,000 or so miles on it..... not real big in the axle shreading power department. :lol:

Sand dunes are the only all out place and that is a rare trip.

And my Soob is stock chassis wise. Only 25" tires (26" as of yesterday though).

 

The first two I could see as I had upper strut mounts fail and the axle/brake lines became my limiting straps. That was a day of days right there. Had to be there, the sounds coming from my wheelwells when the suspension came back down and the strut tried to find it's place again was making my spotter cringe.

So yeah, the first blowout was a given. As the angle were too great so no real power was needed in that case to do damage, only some rotation.

 

The second one failed a week later.

 

But they are in need of replacement again, lots of "whoomp whoomp whoomp" on acceleration in 1st/2nd. Goes away once up to speed. Same thing they did before blowing last time. The needle bearings pulverized in them. (I took a peek in one before rebooting one and exchanging it to make sure it was not something I could take care of without making the drive out to DI.)

 

Out of warranty now so I've been milking them.

 

Now I don't feel any slop when I grab the axle shaft and try to wiggle it in the DOJ. But the whole DOJ does seem to wiggle on the trans output. (Or maybe the output shaft is wiggling. Maybe trans bearings... no leaks though and I would think the seals would show signs of abuse.)

 

Not a DD so it tends to get forgotten till the next time I take it for a spin.

So I've not given it the major checkover I really should.

 

hehe, I really just need to finish building my "new" engine, do my 5-speed swap, and throw some new axles in while I'm at it. Already has new wheelbearings so everything would be fresh as can be. :)

 

I should have cleaned out the grease in them and put synthetic CV grease in like you mentioned before when they were new. Gonna do that on the next set.

In the last axle thread we all talked about the importance of transmission mounts and motor mounts in axle longevity. How are yours? New tranny mounts are ~$10 from Rockauto BTW. They are nothing special, but they're new and $10, probably $25 total for both with shipping, unless you get a ridiculous Rockauto shipping quote:confused:

Hhmmmmmmm........

I believe my mounts have seen better days. Kinda mushy.

 

They are another thing that has been on the to do list.

I'm bumping them up to the do soon list.

 

I did this a LONG time ago (and looking at it, I was still quite the novice welder :lol:).

Nice guide! :popcorn: I am curious what kind of urethane spray do you use? I might use that method rather than buying new mounts if my new ones wear-out

I'm sure it becomes kinda self explanitory once all mounts are side by side and such. But a good guide is always helpful. Plus as I don't have much Soob knowledge beyond my own EA81 I may not have thought about EA82 mounts.
