95 impreza shuts off while in reverse

Recommended Posts

ive got a 95 impreza L 2wd that is giving me the wierdest problems. I likes to shut off while in reverse. It will almost always do it. weather its warmed up or not, weather i accelerate hard or not, weather the a/c is on or not. I dont get it, any ideas?

there is no MIL light on

a/c compressor does turn on and off whenever it wants, not sure if thats related

when im stopped with my foot on the break pedal, there is a mid-high squeeling noise from the transmission, if i put the car in neutral, it goes away,

any idea?

Hrmm

The ac short cycling means it may be low on coolant.

Are you sure the squeeling isnt a loose belt?

How many miles on the car? Does the car stumble then stall, or stalls like someone shut it off?

What recent work has been done to the car?

Does the car do this with the AC on Off or Both?

Put it on jack stands and put it in reverse and see if it still does it. The diff may be locking up when you try to move the car backwards.

Any other problems in forward?

Check the front diff gear lube!

Check the Trans fluid!

i just got the car not too long ago, heres what i have done to it:

new battery

new battery positive terminal

new belts (which are tight and not squeeling, checked again today)

oil change with filter

differential service (it was doing it before the service)

air filter

spark plugs

mid pipe for exhaust

headlamp bulbs

steering rack boots

front and rear brakes pads and rotors

the car is a 95 impreza L 2wd automatic, it is supposed to have an ej18 and has an ej22 in it.

it stalls with or without the a/c on

when i am at a drive thru, i can here like a squeeling type noise when i have my foot on the brake and the car in drive, when i put the car in neutral, it goes away.

also, when the car is in drive and my foot is on the brake, there is alot of vibration from the engine bay.

any ideas?

thanks in advance guys!

Check the engine mounts and transmission mounts.

You need to get someone to help you out so one of you can be under the hood to try to pinpoint the noise while the other is in the car with it in drive, brakes and E-brake on.

Be safe when you do this!
