EJ swap flywheel

For an EJ swap can I use a EA81 flywheel thats already set up for the larger clutch?I have a few of those around, EA82 flywheels, not so much.

then does it still need a 720 throwout bearing?

I'm just kinda curious...I have a parts EA81 that might be salvageable.not sure, I havent been able to check it out yet...god it would be good to get the subi running.

hell, I suppose I could put this first gen mazda rotary in the subi...its sitting is a 70's mazda station wagon...

it would have more HP but no torque...AH!!! must get subi running under subi power..

flywheel has to match the transmission. AFAIK (and I wouldn't be the person to ask....) EA81 and EA82 flywheels aren't interchangeable.

EA81 and EA82 Flywheels are very similar. Same depth step, and the EA82 clutch bolts on. Difference is EA81 Flywheel is about 2 or 3 mm thicker. It wouldn't be hard for a machinist to cut some meet off the back.

This is just what it looked like to me comparing the 2, but I haven't actually tried it.

either way would require hogging out he bolt holes.

I have an EA82 flywheel and clutch between my EA81T and 5 speed DR. I needed shims for the bolt holes because the EA82 bolt holes are larger than on the EA81 flywheel.

BUt if it was going on an EJ, the different bolt holes would not matter.

What I'm saying is, an EA81 Flywheel can be used in an EJ swap. With a 4spd D/R just by hogging out the crank bolt holes.

OR....with an EA82 5spd and clutch if it simply had about 2mm turned off the base

The step, friction face, and clutch plate bolt holes are all the same between EA81 and 82 flywheels. The major difference is the overall thickness.

thanks for the answers.

I have an idea for a later project using that rotary out of the mazda. The rotary is in a mazda RX4 wagon. the body is missing bits like the suspension and what not. supposidly that motor makes 110 HP and 100 lbs tq(at what rpm?10,000?)

the distributor for the rotary has 6 ports. 4 for the spark plugs, one I am assuming for the coil, and another one that goes somewhere...Any idea where it might go?

yes. but at 4000 RPM it makes like 5 hp and 5ftlbs torque it grows to like 6 hp at 4500

heck it will make 1000hp at 25000 rpm.

13b, 12a yay
