Dust leaks rx/rs type body?

I get a lot of dust, I mean A LOT creeping into the interior - not necessarily through the dash vents. Should I look at the rear hatch seal? Can that entire lift be adjusted a little tighter down?

 

What about these funky body vents on the quarter panel, should I try metal taping them off from the inside?

 

Open to ideas, it's one thing to go play and make dust, it's another to get saturated by it on the way there - or going to the grocery store. :mad:

could be the door seals too. My GL leaked dust IN at the bottom rears of the front doors. After a good rally you could see all the fine dust on the door panels.

 

i would say door bottom seals too. or else your floor pans have holes in them somewhere. Also check to be certain the gas tank/ access cover plate hasnt gone MIA.

Comes in around the tail lights on my GL.

 

I tracked it down by cleaning it all up and taking it for a dusty drive.

Then I could trace right where it was coming in. The seals around the lights are pretty dried up.

I know there are other places but on mine that was the biggest spot.

good lord, how about all of the above?

 

tightened the rear light assemblies 1 1/2 turns per nut to 'snug'

 

hatch is leaking like a sieve, added a thin 3/8 wide foam tape (for now)

 

had a hole in the center cargo well (aluminum taped) and I aluminum taped the edges of the particle board covers to seal the compartments

 

small hole in a firewall grommet

 

haven't even gotten to the door seals yet

 

tomorrow morning I'll see if it helped, today was nasty, glacial silt and volcanic ash make a great lip smacking taste

on mine it comes in at the storage compartments in the back

 

I've noticed the same thing with my wagon, those side storage compartments tend to have dust in there from time to time, hmmm? How? I've also noticed if I'm doing bondoglass work and sanding thats the first/only spot that will have some bondo dust inside. Just strange.

 

I would also check the front window seal, I get some water spots on the inside of my front window off and on, but it doesn't leak when I drive in pooring rain, just odd..

I'm starting to think the air vents and the passive circulation system may not have had huge clouds of road dust in mind when they designed it. :rolleyes:

 

On my car that is the funky quarter panel vents with flap seals, the 4 oval air 'inlet' holes on the underside edge of the lift, the 'outlet' vent below the the rear glass on the underside of the lift, the outlet in the cargo wall behind the wheels...

 

today the lift threshold didn't have new smoke trails, but the outlet above it did - I aluminum taped off the 4 oval inlets, tomorrow I'll see if the hatch is still venting dust. Adding the foam tape to the lift threshold seal made a huge difference.

 

hey, dust on a dirt road is a fact of life, but it was getting so obnoxious I was wiping the inside of my windshield about every 20 minutes with a towel on the passenger seat - that get's old over 2 1/2 hours and turning into the sun I was going blind from the crap on the glass > that gets exciting when you can finally see and there are three deer staring at you :eek:

Instead of taping over the trim panels, how bout removing them and then using that foam tape on every joint where they overlap? Then you wouldnt even be able to tell you did anything... Also +1 on sealing all the vent holes, make that baby air tight!

 

I get a ton of dust that comes up through my door seals on my black Brat, mostly on the passenger side but that side got T-boned a while back and the repair isnt exactly top-notch. I also have a few holes in the firewall it comes through. Ill get mine all sealed and water-tight when I redo the interior and wiring, but thats a ways off...

Roger that, all the trim panels are taped with foam from Subaru around the inside perimeter. I bet that's to keep them from squeaking against each other as much as dust... but, some of mine have small pieces missing.

 

I was thinking of laying a 1/2" aluminum tape on the joints only - to seal all the plastic into one air tight piece - most of the problem seems to be the hatch seal lower lip which I have a temp solution for...

 

but you have a good point, re-taping the inside edges with a 3/8" or 1/2" wide softer foam, about 1/4" thick (weatherstripping foam from the hardware store)

might be a good first step, then if it is still obnoxious I can still tape it up like an airplanes cargo pit (all seams taped).

 

I wish I could really get this in a picture, you guys wouldn't believe how much crap has gotten in - I just had those panels off last summer and put in rear speakers and it was nothing like it is now - truly insane.

hmmm, most of it is from the lower lip of the lift seal around the striker, some of it is from the lower door seals - I definitely slowed it down, only have to wipe my windshield every three days now

 

think that I'll foam tape all the trim, like was suggested, and skip the 'cargo pit' seam taping

 

stuck my arm out the window with cell camera, doesn't really do it justice - freakin' cloud follows me for 20+ miles every day

 

had an idea this morning to add a lip to the underside of the top of the spoiler to kick some air down past the tail lights and see if the breaks the vacuum behind the car enough to keep the crap from coming back in the dead air zone and through the seals (as well as look into making an adjustment to the striker and latch of the hatch)

cut a tighter fitting center panel, taped the crap out of everything, adjusted the lift/hatch 1/16" tighter (now holds a piece of paper snugly in the seal) and made a spoiler for the spoiler - maybe that will help too (it's primed from underneath, but the edge that is visible is a red that closely matches) what the he//, maybe kicking a little air down will keep some of it (dust) from creeping back in

 

it was so bad when I took the panels off I had to rinse out the car with a garden hose before I could even think of dealing with it :mad:
