Western WA & OR Heat

Recommended Posts

How are the Subarus here doing during our triple-digits' heat? 114 degrees in the shade at my house at 2:30 p.m. today. Confirmed on two thermometers (one brand new as of today) and with friends' thermometers who live a couple of miles away.

I was out & about in my '86 GL today, from about 11:00 am until 1:30 pm and it did fine. Never overheated & gauge stayed down below the half-way mark where it always is. Thermostat is a 192-degree 1972 - 1989

Subaru GL Beck Arnley Thermostat Thermostat (Price: $17.82) installed last August.

When properly functioning, the heat rejection of Subaru radiators is more than sufficient for 120 degree F operation. The approach temperature with a 192 thermostat is generally about 210. Even 120 degree air will absorb enough of the heat from the radiator to pull the temp down to 192 at the outlet.

I drove my 93 Legacy today at 2:30 this afternoon - about 110 degrees on the road. Drove about 20 miles with the AC cranked. Engine temp was it's usual solid 210 degrees (needle smack in the middle). The engine had no issues at all - the AC could barely keep it around the high 70's in the cabin though :)

It was WAY too hot today. It was 104 in our shop - we started 2 hours early so we could get out of there at 2 pm.

Its only toppin a cool buck (100 degrees) here but the roos not getting to hot. Where are you at? As far as I can tell' date=' North Kirkland hit 105.5 and thats the hottest locally.[/quote']

Longview/Kelso.

It's cooled down some, only 98 here now (almost 7 pm).

It is still 100 here at the north end of Centralia. Unfortunately, I haven't had my Soob out since I'm waiting on a new clutch cable.

I figured that the Chehalis/Centralia area was baking.

It's supposed to be hotter tomorrow. Is that even possible?

I don't even want to entertain the thought. I have to drive my old '67 Ford F250 down to Clatskanie, OR tomorrow...at 55mph the whole way and sweating profusely.

You'll be sweating Angus man...

Only got to 105 here in Toppenish, but it stayed a bit cooler when the cloud cover came in, but the humidity is unreal. My black Brat runs cold, even in this heat! Really need to replace the thermostat in it... Rusty runs perfect, OEM T-stat in it

We have 1 small window unit attempting to cool the shop whilst I cut, weld, and grind all afternoon, but it still keeps it a hair cooler than outside, and much drier. Supposed to be this weather all week *unamused* so Im gonna have to hit up my buddy's pool again

Humidity here today was and is 23%. Can you say "Mojave Desert"?

I'm really, really mssing having my Sub's AC. Gotta' get that sucker going again.

Instead of plowing money into the car AC I had 2 new window AC unit installed in my house less than a month ago. One 6K BTU and one 12K BTU. Man oh man am I glad I went with that instead of the car AC.

It was 107 here in Wenatchee today. Supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. :-\

The good news is that my soob is running nicely, and staying relatively cool. I wish I could say the same about myself, though. Without an A/C, it gets hot, hot, hot.

The 49 Railroad bridge that crosses from Washington to Oregon, just down stream of the Interstate 5 Hwy bridge has been closed all afternoon and evening. Closed to river traffic that is.

Apparently,it's so hot out, that the steel hinge pins that lock the bridge into rail traffic position will not disengage because the metal is swollen from the heat.

So,we're tied to a dock at Sundial. Troutdale area. Waiting for the steel to cool enough for the locks to release so they can swing the bridge for river traffic.

A/C is working fine in the wheelhouse. Two overhead,RV style A/C's working double time just to keep up. Just wanted to share. Sorry about the off topic post.

Not been able to drive mine as it's getting a heart transplant (waiting for parts to hit the mailbox) for WCSS.

But it's always done well in the heat. Always stays right on the first line at the bottom of the temp guage. (about 1/4 of the way up)

102 F here today.

You guys are lucky far as your Subarus not being affected.. I got way up into the red area really quickly when a coolant line blew out. normally the cars running on the warm side, but hasn't given me any trouble.

Didn't notice the temp gauge going up till it was already spiked! >__<

I replaced the line and filled it up with water for the time being, hopefully my heads dident warp.

Today actually felt cooler for me here, but maybe its because I spent the better part of it behind a torch and a welder...

It sucks to be at work though, our shop is filled with barrels of mint oil, so we have 2 choices. a) work outside, in the sun, in the dirt, making a huge mess and no shade or B) go home after lunch, and do as little as possible prior to that

We opt for option B until our space gets cleaned out

114 in the sun here today & yesterday. Verified with a friend a few miles away. So that's what people would have to work in if they were working outside in the sun. Very dangerous.

I keep an eye on my coolant level just to make sure it stays at the filled level, no need to take chances even if the thermostat is doing a good job. One can blow a hose at any time. Although all my hoses are less than a year old. Cheap to replace all, and worth their weight in platinum for the peace of mind.

Hi Subarule,

"Thermostat is a 192-degree 1972 - 1989

Subaru GL Beck Arnley Thermostat Thermostat"

That's a FAILSAFE MotoRad Made in Israel. Automatically LOCKS OPEN to permit coolant flow when overheating occurs.

"Once the FAILSAFEThermostat has locked open, it must be replaced. It cannot be used again."

Not all B/A stats are like this.

I'm not following what you mean. Are you saying it's a one-time use t-stat? A disposable, like disposable cameras?

I've been using this one for a year with no trouble at all. What problem(s) would/should I experience?

Car? No probs the Rx went down I-5 in a hurry from upper 90s in mt vernon to over 100 in everett and idled through traffic there no prob.

The driver: probs. No AC in heat/traffic/pavement. OMFG that was hot but at least the AC was not pushing the engine even more.
