Air Shocks. Are There Any Out There That Will Fit My '82 GL?

Recommended Posts

I have pics somewhere of an EA81 with rear air shocks fitted on a wagon in Oz, so it is possible, I would imagine a Jeep application would work since those are the equivalent shocks that I have installed on my 4 inch lifted hatch.

If you're looking to put these on a stocker, I think you're gonna have to look long and hard...

the easiest solution is to use Subaru EA82 or XT6 air struts.

since EA82's and XT6's came with air suspension stock, whatever it takes to convert to EA82 (or 5 lug) will give you air suspension options.

might as well do a 5 lug conversion while you're at it. in which case you could also use legacy's up front.

he's wanting air struts, do you mean like air bag suspension?

i got nothing on the gabriel site with a search or that part number that was subaru related and an air bag.

i already outlined your best option if you really want "air shocks" in terms of air bag suspension.

You wont find anything aftermarket for a Subaru, it will need to be modified.

Just like a 5 lug swap. To get a XT6 rear air strut to fit a EA81, you will need to do alot of fabricating to make it work.

A air shock for a Jeep should almost bolt right in.

I have Rancho shocks on the rear of my EA81 Hatch. It has a fabbed bracket to accept the top mount, but its mainly to help keep the shock away from the wheel well.

The OP needs to clarify what he wants to do.

+1. Only thing I had to do was massage the Jeep shock's top mount to accept the larger Subaru bolts. Additionally the lower mount's insert/bushing bore is too large for the EA81 bolt.

I think having the rear torsion bars on an EA81 would be detrimental if you were trying to air bag the car. To get the height adjustment you could some how connect an electric motor to the OEM rear suspension adjustment bolt in the torsion bar housing. Or just remove the torsion bars but keep the semi-trailing arms in place, using universal air bags with custom mounts to control ride height.

The possibilities of adjustable-on-the-fly ride height used off road could prove useful in certain conditions...
