sparx
Hi my first post. I need another project vehicle, and again I want something different. I finished up an 85 Pontiac Fiero two months ago and sold it. I found an 80 Brat with 151 K on it. I am going to look at it tomorrow. It is an Arizona car so no rust. It runs so I was told. The four wheel drive works also. What might I check closely that is important on this Subaru? I have not ever had a 4 wheel drive vehicle before. Thanks up front. ihscout54
http://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/1307666236.html Oracle is such a cute place Man I miss AZ. Im guessing thats the one. Fair enough price w/parts car. Finding parts for the gen 1's is really tough out here in the S.W, I passed one up a few months ago because I was too concerned about finding parts. The "a/c vehicle" means it doesnt work or has been removed... These are prone to rust, like any older vehicle. They both probably have the 4speed s/r trannys, Im pretty sure these had weak synchro's and sloppy/poor shifters (just like the gen 2's). Most likely they are 1.6l's (EA71)s. You might get more info in the gen 1 forum. But I wish you the best of luck, and hope to see you around.

The 79 parts car has the engine out and in the trunk, appears something burned, melted and fell on the carb. It's hood is now on the Brat, front bumper will be need for the Brat too. So you miss Arizona, humm... no work, lousy food, and did I mention no work (at least down here in Tucson) I miss Dupage County Illinois myself. I would rather be in Las Vegas area, at least they have decent resturants there. sparx I drove the Brat, it is rust free but well worn. No keys for the Brat, the donor has keys and an ignition lock. Brat windshield is broken, interior is not all that good. Dash severely cracked. Has a/c doubt it works. These are the first Subaru's I have looked and driven since back in the 70's, so I am no expert on value.
ihscout54
I would rather be in Las Vegas area, at least they have decent resturants there. Southern AZ's uneployment is like 8-9% reported, Southern Nevada (Las Vegas) Is nearly 13% reported expersts are saying its closer to 20% not counting those who are under employed. STAY AWAY from Vegas. The cars looked pretty clean in the pics but if they arent so hot then you pass on 'em. Did the seller seem flexible/realistic, or was he one of those "if Im sellin it its made of gold" sellers?
555jay
I'm sure you saw this ad for a white 82 down there? http://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/1301678739.html I was eyeballing it, but the price was a little higher than my "fun budget," and the 8-hr drive was prohibitive. Sure, drove this one also. Condition was much better than the other BRAT. This BRAT was decent feels solid, but I still was not willing to pull the trigger. The owner states not negotiable, but even at that I was not eager. The a/c on this one might work according to the owner. The pass side head gasket was leaking oil down on the exhaust and smoking. There is bad CV joint. No significant rust and no significant damage. Dash was very nice considering being so old and in the desert heat.
