Hi, need to verify something. If there are those slots on the clutch drum as I have seen in a few torque bind threads. Can the slots also cause a delay in AWD or NO awd? If the shaft going to the back of the transfer case broke would there definitely be some sort of noise with the front wheel slipping? Is it pretty well extremely unlikely it broke? I have a duty solenoid c code on my 94 SS. And I have a parts tranny. I am thinking I will swap over the good duty solenoid and file the slots if there are any. Any other suggestions and opiniosn would be great. Already tried changing the fluid like 5 times btw lol.

Yes, the 'slots' on the drum can cause an AWD engagement delay. Mine took a second or so to engage. I removed the rear tranny housing (did NOT have to remove tranny), filed down the grooves, replaced the Duty C, and the delay was gone.

I STILL get torque bind on occasion, as the plates (?) need replaced, but it's 90% better overall, so I'm just living w/it.

 

Also, might test w/the FWD fuse in. If the fuse eliminates the torque bind then you know the Duty C is OK (although I'd still change it if you fix the slots.)

Solenoid failure usually throws the car into full time 4wd, not awd. Defaults is full time 4wd. The fuse puts the car in FWD for diagnostics, emergencies, and flat tires. No awd is a tired clutch pack.

You can have a failed solenoid and a tired clutch pack.

 

That would give you no AWD even though the soleoid has failed. Since you had signs of this already this is most likely what happened.

I think that if the computer senses that even by cutting voltage to the C solenoid there is still a difference in front and rear wheel spin it will trigger the code. Letting you know there is a problem with the transfer clutch, even though the solenoid works.

 

Also I think it's possible for the solenoids to fail to an open condition, where they won't close and seal all the way to hold pressure on the clutches.
